Summary: Hush, it's okay-I'm here for you.
No
one had expected him to die.
Hakoda. Loving father of two;
head of the Southern Water Tribe. Valiant fighter; brilliant
leader.
But even the bravest are no match for nature.
Katara
and Sokka stood on the beach, watching as the black water lapped at
the shore, bringing splinters of wood that lay oddly dark against the
white sand. The storm had passed, but the clouds hadn’t yet broken
up. A seagull crowed in the distance as a faint rush of wind tousled
their hair.
“First Mom…” Katara whispered, the tears
welling up in her eyes. “And now…”
The wind picked up,
blowing bitterly cold against them. Sokka held Katara close, feeling
the lump in his throat rising and threatening to choke him. The first
of Katara’s sobs broke out as she buried her face into Sokka’s
coat, drenching it with tears; each one of her sobs sent a dagger
straight to his heart and broke it, over and over again. All he
could bear to do was stroke her head with his gloved hand and looked
out over her, into the distant horizon.
His own eyes were
beginning to cloud over, but he bit his tongue and fought back the
tears. Now was not a time to break down-he had to be here for
Katara. There was no room for his own weakness.
He gently
parted from Katara and tilted her face toward his with his left hand,
then wiped away her tears with his right.
“Shh…” he
murmured. “We still have each other, and that’s what matters. Mom
and Dad would’ve wanted us to continue on, stronger than ever,
after they left… They wouldn’t want us to stand around sobbing
all day, right?”
He forced a smile. Katara hesitantly
returned it, her lower lip trembling, her eyes beginning to
swell.
“I guess you’re right…” she said after a
moment, tentatively wiping her eyes. “But all the same-it’s
still… it’s still such a shock…”
Sokka hugged Katara
and brought her in close to him, patting her back.
“Shh…”
He held her as the clouds began to part and the sea began to sparkle
with the light of dim rays of sunshine. He heard a rustle of wings
as a seagull took flight from the craggy rock by the shore,
disappearing white against the dark clouds. “I’m here for you.”
He
let a teardrop fall-but only one.
