using Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended
ONE
On a normal day, I blend before I color but this started out as a Bel icon and then I suddenly decided to add Freddie in midway so this is going to be longer than it probably has to be /disclaimer. Anyway, once again I start with prepping the cap with duplicated layers. For this particular one, we have Base > Multiply 100% > Screen 100% then stamp the image on a new layer and set it to Soft Light, 75%. I stamp the result in a new layer, resize the canvas to 100x100 then decide on the crop. I wanted lots of negative space so I made her teeny-tiny then smudged the green around her to make this:
I just love working with The Hour because the colors are always so gorgeous already without me having to do a thing.
TWO
I took a texture by
innocent_lexys and set to screen 100%
>>>
THREE
since that washed it out a little, I stamp the image on a new layer and set it to Multiply 20%
FOUR
Now for some lighting, I create a new layer (below the Multiplied one above) add a light blob and move it to the upper right corner.
>>>
I want to get darker shadows so I create a black and white gradient layer and set it to Soft Light 50%
>>>
a little of the color was lost so I stamp the image on a new layer and set it to Soft Light 50%
FIVE
At this point I thought I was pretty much done with it so I stamp the image on a new layer, desaturate it and add some filters for texture (Film Grain--1, 20, 1) sharpening (Paint Daubs--1, 1). Then I set it on Hard Light 20%

Yeah, the icon could've been pretty much done already but I decided to play with coloring a bit. And nowadays, I choose to color using Hard Light layers most of the time. I also should mention that I always put these color fill layers BELOW the multiplied base (in step 3) so that the effect is more subtle.
Anyway, I add a new color fill layer #776687 and set it to Hard Light 100%. This gives her shirt a deeper color blue. I then create a layer mask and erase the parts of it in her face and hair because I didn't want it to be purple.
>>>
>>>
to get deeper skin tones, I create another color fill layer #b56666 and set it to Hard Light 50%. I then create a layer mask to erase the effect on the background because I wanted to keep that green hue (for the moment at least.)
>>>
>>>
SEVEN
I wanted to go darker so I create a new color fill layer #fae6d7 and set it to multiply 100%. this wasn't dark enough so I duplicate it and lower the opacity to 50%
>>>
>>>
EIGHT
now for the fun part, I decide to try the style of painting colors in that
tilty made a few tutorials for over @ tumblr. I use a yellow shade for her hair (#f7f69f) and blue for her clothes (#9df5ec). the trick is to use lighter shades since you're probably going to blend them in using Darken, Multiply, Color Burn or Linear Burn. For this icon, I set it to Linear Burn, 100%
>>>
NINE
It's at this point that I decide to blend Freddie in. I take the cap and set it to screen 100%. I was making the icon for the unusual crop challenge at
a_mused so I decide not to show his face or profile in the crop. I also make a layer mask and erase the parts of the cap that were covering her face.

TEN
I was beginning to think it was too red so I make a new levels layer with these values:
RGB 0 1.16 255
RED 0 0.86 255
GREEN 0 1.03 255
BLUE 0 0.83 255
ELEVEN
now it's too green so I create a Hue/Saturation layer and set the hue to +23 so it's a little more bluish
TWELVE
it's a sign that I think I'm done when I decide to add texture/sharpening. Again I use the Film Grain and Paint Daubs filters. I can't tell the exact values but it's most likely similar to Step 5. (for Film Grain I usually only change the highlight area depending on the cap. if it's already too bright, I lower it to maybe 10, if it's dark I go as high as 20)
THIRTEEN
But I'm not done yet! There's something bugging me about the color so I add a Vibrance layer +50 and saturation +10
I then add a brightness/contrast layer (+10/-10) hoping I'll finally be satisfied with it.
FOURTEEN
but I'm still not satisfied and since vibrant didn't work, I decide to mute it. I create a white color fill layer and set it to Saturation 66%. Obviously this wasted all the hard work I did painting/coloring Bel so I create a layer mask so that Freddie is desaturated while Bel is not.
>>>
FIFTEEN
I want Freddie to be a bit more Sepia instead of white so I create a new color fill layer #f9dbc8 and set it to Linear Burn 75%. The effect is too strong so I create another white color fill layer and set it to saturation 50% and finally, the icon is done!
