This Monday I am getting my hands on the PS2 build of Resident Evil 4 (or a demo at least). From what I've seen, it looks incredibly faithful to it's original imagining. The developers have made sure that the gameplay remains intact which is the most important thing in my opinion. They've also added a bunch of extras including a new weapon and a bonus mission which touts 6 extra hours of gameplay! The graphics, which most people thought would take a huge hit, remain gracefully intact. They even got 9 enemies on screen at once just like the GC version.

Unfortunately there are some downsides:

There is occasional slowdown when the screen gets jammed and environments needed to be toned down, sometimes severely. One environment was even omitted completely :( Also, they did away entirely with dynamic lighting effects which is a real heartbreaker. Textures have taken a slight hit as well especially the villager's faces.

Here's a side by side. A whole ton more can be found here.

Another thing I have noticed is that Leon's hair is a lot more flowey in the PS2 version, which is good I suppose? Also, cutscenes in the PS2 version are videos of the real-time cutscenes in the GC version (tsk tsk!)
