In the In-Between

Holly and I had both been damaged, stunted by our murders.

Mr. Harvey had taken away our lives, our ability to grow and to grow up. The in-between world he sent us to was like the inside of a snow globe or a dollhouse. It was an enchanting, magical place where we were trapped. A perfect place nonetheless separated from all meaning.

There, Holly and I might dance together, wear all kinds of wonderful clothes, pick armloads of wildflowers and act out a thousand movies but never quite connect, never really know each other because the substance of us, what we had been, was in the past. It had been taken away. Holly and I might call each other friends, but we could never love each other because real love is a thing of heaven and earth and not of the in-between places.
