Waiting For Her
Burning with fever, his wounded leg throbbing painfully Peeta knew he was finished.
On the bank of the stream he lay down and wondered which would be the better way to go, to be found and butchered or to slowly succumb to infection and starvation? Even defeated, he couldn’t give up entirely. All he could do was hide as best he could, camouflage himself so that he couldn’t be easily found, and wait for his inevitable death.
Then came the trumpets, the announcement that if two tributes from the same District were the last standing, both would be allowed to live. Just like that he and Katniss were allies, no longer pitted against each other. It was possible that they could both survive.
Hearing the announcement, Peeta knew that Katniss would come looking for him and huntress that she was she would find him.
Still half-submerged in the mud and the weeds, still pained by his wound and burning with fever, he stopped waiting for death and started waiting for her.
