The Long Winter
When Cutter thought back to the time he had been separated from his family he remembered bleak and endless cold.
He knew it was his memory playing tricks.
The seasons had changed; he had marked their turning eight times eight times eight again. Yet he did not remember the times of growing greenness, of ripe berries or of falling leaves, only cruel winds, snow and ice, bitter cold, and an aching numbness that seemed to never end.
Separated from his lifemate, his cubs, and his brother in all but blood he might have frozen to death if not for Redlance and Nightfall.
Remembering that long winter of his heart it seemed that the only warmth he found was in their arms.
They had welcomed him into their embrace sharing their love and the joy and hope brought by their daughter. Knowing there was still love, joy, and hope - that had kept him from succumbing completely to the deadening chill of despair that gnawed at him for what seemed like a lifetime.
