When Uo-chan was a gang, pre-series, she was sexually involved with another gang member, a girl her age who called herself Gruzilla. Gruzilla called herself a honky tonk angel after the Kitty Wells song and worshipped high drama American country singers like Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Dottie West and Tammy Wynette as well as Dusty Springfield. She was a very petite girl, much tinier than Arisa with a round, sweet baby face. She wore her hair (bleached white blonde) in a bouffant as well as heavy panda bear eye-liner. Gruzilla was smart, original and funny with a lot of intellectual curiosity. She and Uo-chan developed a friendship in the gang which eventually led to exploration and actual sex. The girls genuinely cared for each other but their attachment was ultimately unhealthy. Unlike Uo-chan, who never got into that aspect of gang life, Gruzilla was heavily involved in drugs, particularly heroin, and became increasingly angry and erratic when she wasn’t high. Seeing what was happening to Gruzilla was part of what provided Uo with the motivation to get out of the gang. Gruzilla was one of the many things Uo didn't tell Tohru and Hana about her life during that period, but Tohru's mother, Kyoko, knew.
