I live in a Gothic novel (so I must eventually become a damsel in distress?)

I have joked about this, citing the spider webs that appear overnight in the corners of my living room and the swaths that festoon the basement I so rarely enter -- it's got a dirt floor, a low ceiling, and floods whenever it rains for several days straight, so I don't keep anything down there anyway. So why pay the cellar any attention? I only ( Read more... )

I know that bats don't carry rabies more than others (did you know that rats don't carry rabies at all? How odd), but the real danger with bats is that if they bite you when you're asleep, you won't know,a nd thus don't get treated in time with the vaccine *___* Thank you, Ira Glass, for being wigged out about this, and thus wigging me out in a second-hand way DDD:

This becomes kind of creepy becase as I was about to share this info with you last night, there was screeching in the hall--a bat in the Boy's brother's house. Checked on internet how to capture, and Boy did it at 12:30am, amid much shouting and hysterical laughter. Poor thing. It was actually quite cute--and a lot smaller than your friend.

DLing the old favorites on the next-gen consoles is lots of fun--the Boy DLed classic Zelda and it was awesome&hearts

We had a Mario 1 fest a few months ago, and got, I think, to the last level before crashing. The Wii controller is a bit odd to get used to at first for Mario, I agree. Apparently, there's enough agreement on this that they sell retro controllers to use with the Wii for us nostalgic yet non-adaptive types ^_^; But it sounds like it was a lot of fun.

Got a reachout from Ashgate about dissertation--> book, because they're trying to expand more in to medieval. Not sure how to respond. emailed Chris, but no response. Stupid work email marked the email as read though I had never seen it, so it sat in my inbox for two weeks before I even knew it was there *___* I know they do lots of gender stuff, but . . . not sure how great they'd be in terms of tenure, even if they ended up wanting it--but a book would make me more flexible if I wanted to leave. Would a book from Ashgate do it? Don't know. I wish I knew more about this whole process--and that I wasn't far away from the people who might advise me T__T

Hmm, one of my students told me that a friend had a bat incident the same night I did. Is it an underground movement? Bats trying to take over the world, one house at a time? I guess i missed that "This American Life." Like I miss most of them, honestly. I am given the impression from biologist friends that the bat wouldn't bite unless threatened, so why would the bat be biting people who are asleep? Well, there was no biting, and I always sleep with my door shut anyway.

Ashgate, hmmm. I think a UP is probably the way to go. Or a Brewer imprint. While Ashgate is legit, you might have to expend energy explaining that, whereas a UP automatically looks good. I guess? I'm sure Chris will get back to you, but she's in the middle of moving across the continent, so give her some time. (I say even as I am being impatient about Patty getting back on my redraft)

Listening to the new Arashi -- Jun actually sounds pleasant in a lot of it! And Nino's controlling the vibrato! It's pretty.

If they're rabid, all normal behavior patterns are off--they just want to attack.

Seriously-- you should check out the episode--it's from just before last halloween, and it's quite riveting. I think the episode theme is 'things you usually don't fear which suddenly become terrifying.'

I feel so behind on the whole world. I'll try to get ahold of the new Arashi. It will be at the house when I get there, I think--or a couple of days after . . .

edit

I heard the song, and it is adorable&hearts Very pretty, would be interesting to see in concert, presumably in the encores. DVD, please Johnny.

So I've heard the the DAL DVD was nixed by some kind of technical/filming problem at the con . . . still want that footage, though. There were two concert reports on morning programs on 6/16/08--Zoom in and Mezamashi, but the only trace of them since they haven't been subbed and just barely predate onlyarashifiles, appears to be available at forgyozaD: Oh well, I will keep looking, I guess . . .

Chris got back to me from her retreat (she gets back and then gets to the packing and moving-playing her fiddle with friends is an annual thing, I guess. She said the same thing, which I kind of figured, but wanted to be sure . . . also, she contradicted what I was told re:articles v. book at an early first year faculty workshop, which strongly stated that no publisher would want anything more than a 1/3 available in article form, so she says I don't have to just decide one or the other; just keep article-pumping and go back to book it if and when I feel the need. So I am relieved . . . and I kind of think The New MA series is a pretty decent fit and a better spot, if I can go about it in this way (and, you know, if they wanted it ^^ ")

Isn't the New MA series defunct? Or did it just move from Minn to another press? (Palgrave?) I think that series would be a good fit, though Penn also does plenty with gendery projects, doesn't it?

So, I totally didn't write any articles this summer. Or much of anything, dammit. And now I need to be focusing on class planning instead of anything else. I am so lost on readings for this comp class. I have a bunch in mind, but I don't know what should be the starting point. Going to reread some Imagined Communities today in hope that it could start us off. I need something that sets some definitions of some sort before we start to unravel or problematize them.

I should make every Friday this fall be a scholarship day. No class prep, no grading, just me and Chaucer or whatever. Even job stuff will be done on M-R days. Just so I can get at least some work done on a semi-regular basis. I'll bet I can maintain this for about a month. I'm clearly doing well at it right now. I should grade the stuff I collected today before I read, probably.

Filming problems, really? Where did you hear this? They can still give us a digest, surely. I want to see those damned floats for more than three seconds. And "Gimmick Game" and "Once Again". I vaguely remember seeing those reports, but they were really brief and clippy. Good enough to get you a cap of Nino's astroturf flower-garden outfit, maybe... At least, if there's a concert DVD from this year's tour, all the new singles can't fill up the entire concert, so I hope they will still do some of the DAL material. Still, this is probably misguided optimism, since the boys seem to be saying the 2009 tour will be from the Best of album, and there's not really a lot of DAL on that. Is there any? (And would they perform both "Cool & Soul" and "Remarkable"? That would be sweet.) And there's no solos on the Best of, so maybe... Not that Nino seems to want to give us GG when he can sit on his butt for "Niji." Brat. But I guess I can appreciate the desire to sit still after all the manic running around for the first hour of the concert.

What would be awesomely hilarious would be for each of them to do a medley of all his solos in the last ten years -- with layered costumes to strip off. Though that might be hard for Nino, since he'd also have three instruments to juggle as well as costume changes. Or maybe just mix and match -- so Sho does "Anti Anti" in the fluffy white sweater and Aiba does "Friendship" in the Muay Thai gear. Hee hee!

Somehow my class today opened with some talk about zombies. I refrained from revealing that I'm reading a boyband fanfic set during a zombie apocalypse. Apparently the remakes of the Living Dead series have sprinting zombies instead of the usual slow ones. I suppose that might make the movies more tense and less just total depression.

Palgrave has it, and they were still putting out new books in April, so It's definitely still around. They seem like a pretty good fit to me. I think Penn is good for gender, but . . . I really don't know if this project would be up their alley. Maybe I'm just intimidated by the awesomeness of some of the books in their catalogue ^^"

I should be able to send out the Gowther this week, but I fully expect it to be rejected the first place I send it, as it's a bit of a long shot ^^"

I will also be trying to make Fridays scholarship days. We shall see how that goes.

I wonder if they'll do the image songs at the concerts. . . I would love it. I love both of those songs, so any chance to see them again would be great.

I'd be surprised if they didn't do any solos, though your medley idea is pretty hilarious ^_^

Eyeball hurts. Looking forward to more zombies. Cleaning up after return. Writing choppy sentences. ^_~

Ha! The LJ homepage "writer's block" prompt is a Rorschach blot -- to me it looks like bats, of course!

I had a similar reaction to it--a bat, and then the pelvic area (x ray version).
