Hell hath no fury like a stylist scorned

Okay, so Arashi often wear strange outfits. And so do a lot of the other celebrities making promotional appearances. It's a hazard of the job, I guess, having to don 'fashion' in the name of spectacle.

But usually the boys get to look mostly decent -- or stupid with companionship. But these last couple of weeks, poor Nino's been standing out from the crowd.

VS Arashi seems to have abandoned its modus operandi of matching black sweatpants + random t-shirt in favor of more 'stylish' outfits.

What's really funny here is that everyone is mocking Jun's outfit. Almost as if Aiba and Nino aren't wearing those pants...

The new outfits often include hats, as above -- which really seems sort of dumb, given the frequent need to run, look directly up, and have a clear line of vision.

My favorite hat so far:

Cleverly ironic in its obviousness, or just sparkly?

Jun is a rebel.

But note the necessity of turning the hat around in order to play the game skillfully.

Anyway, with fashion freedom comes individuality: Nino and Ohno get cute tennis shoes. And Nino gets manly acid-wash denim capri pants.

Umm... okay...

Two weeks later, the situation has escalated:

I'm not sure if this is supposed to be aggressively cute with its bold pastels. And I really don't think Nino's a hat kind of guy. I think it is not meant to look good.

And he has to wear this in front of Gackt.

Gackt is just a little smug about how ridiculously hot he is.

Nino is just ridiculous. He even makes Ohno uncomfortable.

If it were just VS Arashi, I might think the silly outfits are just a bid to appeal to the Saturday morning viewers. But the problem is more widespread. Clearly, Nino has pissed off the stylists somehow.

Hey Hey Hey last week:

Everyone else looks pretty darned good (I've learned to accept Aiba's cropped pants as a fact of life). Kind of a general white and grey color scheme -- amid which Nino's gold jacket really draws the eye.

And then the eye notices that it's practically a bolero. Or is the shirt underneath just oddly long? Weird. Unattractive.

And what's with the sweater around his waist? Did he spill something on himself right before taping and not have time to change his pants?

And is that a trick of the lighting, or the hypothetical spill? Or are those pants acid-wash too? I really don't think that particular fashion trend needs to come back.

On last week's Music Lovers live, the other four get to look really good. I quite like Aiba's buttoned up vest look. And Jun is particularly stylin' in his tight pleather pants -- in case you didn't notice. (And his forehead is back!)

If we read from left to right as the onscreen Roman text suggests, it's quite a pleasing lineup. And then we get to the end of the line.

Nino. Oversized t-shirt. One of those long sweater-coat things. And a knee-length vest with vertical stripes to make it look even longer.

The back just looks weird, since it tries to do that back-of-the-vest-is-satin thing, but the part below the waist is the same fabric as the front. But the layered skirts flare nicely in spins, I guess.

Somehow that doesn't stop me from cringing.

Aiba and Sho try to look as stupid as Nino, but they're still so much better dressed that they retain a large portion of their dignity despite their efforts.

Sho, you'd do anything for your friends, huh?

Yesterday's VS Arashi has me pretty convinced that someone has a grudge against Nino. They're not even trying to pretend that they're dressing him with any kind of fashion sense anymore.

I can't decide whether this is what the vengeful stylists laid out for him -- or whether what they laid out was so much worse that he instead chose to go to taping in the scruffy personal clothes he scavenged off his floor that morning when he dragged himself out of bed too late for work to look for anything fresh, cramming a stupid trucker hat on his head with the expectation that stylists would take care of his hair at the studio. Those staff must be pissed, too.

What did he do? I hope he makes amends soon, since I much prefer pretty Nino over deliberately uglified Nino.

At least we can take consolation in the fact that Mr Peanut &hearts LA. Like me, Ohno is a bit confused by this concept.

My overly long afternoon nap has completely destroyed my chances of a proper night's sleep. I suspect tomorrow (today) will be somewhat useless, even though I really need to get work done. Arrgh. I am so self-destructive.
