The electrical failures are as frustrating as I'd hoped.
Unfortunately they seem to be frustrating me more than anyone else in the area.
I decided to go down to the Gallery before dusk and have a word with Joyce Summers. I'm sure I can find some excuse, perhaps even invite her for a Christmas drink, she isn't unattractive. I'll deanimate the power leeches while there, if the oportunity presents itself.
It's quite a short drive from the Inn. The street lamps went out as I was going through town. In effect, the power failures herded me toward the lighted area and I had almost drawn level with "The Magic Box" before I realised quite where I was. At a quick glance the place seemed surprisingly busy. I'm sure I saw at least two women go in and out of the back. I wonder if Ripper runs the place himself or whether he employs staff? Either way, he would seem to be surprisingly successful at his new vocation.
I am fairly sure I made it to The Gallery without being recognised - and dear heavens, she has a Famille Rose piece in the window! In this pathetic little backwater! I could hardly believe it! She clearly knew its value, too. The price is startling, but reasonable for the genuine article. Those wretched little ebony carvings and the masks had led me to completely underestimate her. I asked about her suppliers and she simply said that she had sourcesand refused to discuss the matter further.
That decided me. I have approached her about obtaining the Collingwood portrait. I'd assume that the town itself would be the first place to look. I wonder if she could possibly succeed in obtaining it?
I asked to see some of her other stock and did succeed in getting her to leave me alone in the display area while she fetched some insignificant items.
Unfortunately the prayer to de-animate the power-leaches is not as simple as the animation> I was distracted when two young men started behaving oddly in the street outside. First they ran to one side of the street, then they started to turn as though looking for something, then they seemed to have an argument before lifting a manhole cover and climbed down - presumably into the sewer system.
Sunnydale is an extraordinary place.
