Earth Hour

Today, from 8:30 to 9:30, we participated in "Earth Hour" I know the criticisms of the event - that it's mere symbolism, that just turning off the lights for an hour does not cause a significant environmental impact and does nothing to fight climate change. But there is something about candlelight that reminds me that we are all connected, that our actions now are linked to the past, and impact our future. Without electric light, computers, and the TV to distract us, my father reminisced about his childhood. His mother's family came from a village where electricity had yet to arrive in the 1950s, where the evenings were spent in the shadows cast by oil lamps and the children heard stories sitting outside on the steps, with nothing but the moon, stars, and candles to cast light on their dreams.

Such is the power of candlelight. Therein lies Earth Hour's power to tap into our collective past and make us mindful of the steps we need to take to ensure our planet's future.
