LOST IT COMPLETELY ALONG WITH SANITY AND GENERAL INTELLIGENCE
I mustered up enough self-possession to read the rest of the story and then I lost it again at the ending kiss. Happy Ita/Shi, oh god, it's a need of this fandom...
And who could blame the crazy lantern spirit, honestly?!
The descriptions of Shisui at the very borders of life and death--ancient sense of time, walking along the bottom of the river (!!) are absolutely phenomenal, and so chilling...
...and then his dialogue is fucking hilarious. I bet Kishi is secretly following his comm and will eventually take his writing cues from all you guys who write such amazing Shisuis /jealous
I loved Shisui trying so hard to make Itachi understand the fact of his presence...I have a serious weakness for fics that subvert the relationship like that, and this is one of the best I've read.
IT WAS EPIC. Thank youuu for this! <3

and in an effort to make sure the lj-cut formatting worked correctly, i made a version where I hand-inserted every bloody < i > italic marker, cursing myself for my love of italics along the way >____>
in my mind at least, the lantern spirit actually loved itachi, it was just a jackass to everyone else/extremely selfish, and bad at expressing itself XD and i just realized, there are barely any other characters in this entire thing besides Itachi, Shisui, the lantern demon, and a dog. +_+
...it would be horribly remiss of me to make Shisui a ghost and not have him walk on the bottom of the Nakano, i think :P
i have to steal mai's shisui, in my poor attempts to make him as funny as you guys do, because that bouncy Shisui is probably 70% of the reason why I'm in this OTP. >_ ( ... )

I...liked the lantern spirit? It was so weird and trickster-creepy, just fit the feel of the festival and the aura of traditional myth that pervaded the entire thing.
"Itachi, Shisui, a lantern demon, and a dog" is a perfectly good cast. It sounds like some kind of art movie. You should look into this.
EVERYBODY LOVES MUSH, OKAY? If they don't, send them to me, and I'll...extract a confession to the contrary.

:D yes indeed I have a huge obsession with mythology, being an extreme dork, and i love horror/creepy stories. Japan happens to be fantastic at horror. if there was a myth-y aura, I've done my job XD there's also some mononoke influence in here fairly clearly x_x
thank you! i'm so glad! ..i love the lantern spirit :3 and i also loved making it a shameless jackass bent on infuriating Shisui.
..har har har XD the play version! A lantern spirit, a Dog, and Some Uchiha Boys- wacky hijinks ensue!
sasuke is nowhere to be found, apparently.also i should have illustrated my own story, but i'd been working on it so long that i just wanted to post it finally. :/ i probably still can ( ... )

This was fantastic! Loved the way you showed the ghost aspect, especially the pain of not being able to feel or impact the world around him (I think that'd be my personal hell), especially when he knows he should be. Shisui's pleas to Itachi were heartbreaking, and the scene where they finally connect was beautiful.
Shisui gathers all his will in his hand, and slams it into the wall. It makes a dull thump. I’m always here, you moron ( ... )

Yeah no i feel like not having anyone see you or talk to you for weeks would drive anyone a bit batty. Even Shisui, who's a bit batty to begin with. XD
the lantern spirit is just... misunderstood. or you know, kinda malicious to shisui :/
Who wouldn't fall in love with Itachi? XD and this has absolutely nothing to do with him being my favorite character in Naruto, nuh-uh. in my head the lantern spirit is very old, possibly a kitsune, and really did fall in love with Itachi. ;_;
the scene where itachi finally sees him was a bitch to write, so thank you :D
drowning would be a really, really awful way to die, in reality. :/
THE POWER OF LOVE, har har har. there is a lot of sap here *is shot*
Congratulations is really addicting, good luck getting it out of your head :/

This may be my new favorite canon-verse ItaShi fic ever, if only because it takes them entirely out of the usual context of tragic clan drama and creates something new but still fitting into the Naruto universe. I think I've beat the Mononoke comparison to death (which reminds me that I need a Mononoke icon), but even more than that, this to me has the feel of a Kabuki play. The fog, the bridge, the lantern lights seem like props (not in a bad way!), you can almost hear the shamisens and flutes, the wooden clappers that announce scene changes.
Japanese mythology my baby love ♥___♥ Man, in this universe, I can just imagine mythical creatures walking around between the slices of reality. Umbrella monsters, long-necked ghosts playing the koto, the Ya-Mamba hunting children, kitsune women serving you tea and mochi that are actually spring water and rocks. HEY HEY CAN I LIVE IN THIS UNIVERSE TOO?
Some further belated beta-ing:It’s ( ... )

f-"favorite canon-verse ItaShi fic ever"?! WHUH. *__________________* ♥♥♥ don't kill my brains, i need them.
I can't even tell you how flattered I am about any japanese mythology-comparisons. I tried.
also i feel like straight canon-verse with these two is beaten to death... so this is my sappy substitute for the actual drowning. also i suck at tragedy, clearly *snort* >_>
you want mononoke icons? i have... so many. i collect them like pokemon cards. i can give you them in zip file, or you can look thru pana's stuff. :D ( ... )

I love how Shisui is slowly, so slowly, able to make Itachi realize that some spirit was in his body, and then Itachi tries to get him back, and that part breaks my heart because I feel for Itachi and his unwavering loooooove. I'm not that sympathetic to Shisui in this story though because really? Floating around in spirit world (excluding the fact that your body is being taken over) sounds pretty awesome.
Also, I really like this line: How Shisui ended up on Itachi’s list of people to fight till the end of the earth for, he doesn’t know :DD
Okay, so, this story of yours is absolutely crazy, but I LOVE IT OMGGGG. I saw your other drabble too, so I'll go to read that now.

I'm a sucker for them being really devoted to each other. +_+ this story even starts where a relationship is already half-established; they're comfortable enough for Itachi to want snog Shisui all passion-filled-like XD;; ..TRAGIC CANON, WHAT TRAGIC CANON? XO
That's really interesting to hear, I tried to make Shisui's time in the parallel universe filled with horror and alienation etc... but i can't imagine it would be all bad. he gets to walk underwater afterall :D
Thank you ♥ XD weird is what we aim for.

Ahaha, that's right. Ignore the tragedy you call THEIR LIVES and create this AU that totally isn't canon but is close enough because drowning (or at least an attempt at it) still occurs. It is geniusss asd;kjal;sd.
Oh, I definitely feel his alienation and horror. I mean, I would never want such a thing to happen to myself, but I'm not above wanting to experience it through a fictional character. :P

ahahahaha. i like referencing canon. it's... what makes it ItaShi? this is my extremely un-subtle curtain-pulling over canon. notice my Itachi is so sappy he can't even follow through with it to save his friend from body-displacement. ._.
