A/N: Hello peoples! This is my first fic in a few years, so I'm a little rusty and I hope it doesn't show too much =P Anyway, this story is AU (as you'll notice soon…) and Shisui and Itachi are brothers (it's not romantic so don't worry about grossness…well maybe you don't think it's gross but whatever…yeah let's insult the readers before they read, that's a GREAT idea!...anywho…) who are five years apart (ages five and ten). Well, hope you like it!
The BSCQ
Once upon a time, there lived a tiny little boy name Itachi. He was only five years old when his older brother, Shisui, told him the truth about Santa Claus. But let's not get to that quite yet…
It was December 4th and Shisui Uchiha was sitting on the floor of the 1960s puke-yellow carpet in his living room, about to ask his mother the Big Santa Claus Question (or BSCQ). He looked up at his mother, who was sitting comfortably on the plush, green fabric covered couch knitting a pair of sox for her nephew Charlie, and hesitated as he tried to decide if he really wanted to ask the question or not.
You see, little Shisui had noticed over the past few years some suspicious happenings around Christmas that made him suspicious of this so-called "Santa Claus." Among other things, there was one year when he had asked his father for a toy kitchen set and his father only looked at him and said "maybe Santa will bring it." Nevertheless, that Christmas Shisui got his beloved kitchen set. There was also many a time that Shisui would be wearing a sweater Santa Claus had gotten him for Christmas and his mother would say, "That's a lovely sweater! Didn't I get you that for Christmas?" Shisui would sadly remind his mother that he had gotten it from Santa and go up to his room and sulk.
Now, as Shisui sit on the floor, looking nervously up at his mother, he found the courage to ask her the BSCQ.
"Um…Ma?"
His mother looked up from her knitting, a curious look on her face. Shisui continued,
"Is…is Santa Claus real?"
He was all but petrified when his mother looked at him with sorrowful eyes and asked him if he really wanted to know. It took him a few seconds, but he replied very simply, "no." However that wasn't entirely true.
The next day, little Shisui walked up to his father, who was making himself lunch on a cold Sunday afternoon, and asked him the same question he had asked his mother the day before. His father took a deep breath, sighed, and answered.
"Well, son, you see, Santa Claus is more like… a spirit. Something that people believe in even though they know it's not really there."
Shisui's eyes were watering up a bit now. Even though he was prepared for what had come, now that it was confirmed, new questions were popping into his head like prairie dogs out of the dirt. What kind of spirit? An evil one? A ghost?! But, most importantly, would he still get presents? Once his father had answered those questions, Shisui was much calmer. But he still felt a little bit sad inside.
So he did what any ten-year-old would do. He told his younger sibling. Poor little Itachi was devastated when he heard the news and bawled for a good ten minutes.
Once Shisui was sure the crying had stopped, he decided they should play a game or two of hide-and-seek to get their minds off of Santa Claus. They went back and forth until it was Shisui's turn to count again. He had checked all the usual hiding places and all the other places he could think of, but still no sign of his little brother. After a minute of double checking some hiding spots, Shisui stood in the hall, stumped. Where on Earth could he be hiding?
Then, suddenly, he thought of a place he hadn't checked: the closet under the stairs. The only problem was that the closet was always locked. So how could Itachi have gotten in there in the first place? But there was no other place to look, so Shisui dashed down the stairs, swung around the newel post, and skidded to a stop at the door to the closet.
As he had suspected, the door was no longer locked, but he was still puzzled as to why it was unlocked. Ignoring the thought, adrenaline running through his body (he was that close to finding his brother after searching for so long), he swiftly opened the closet door to find…
Shisui stopped stiff in a deer-in-the-headlights sort of position, straight and hard as a statue. In a huge pile in front of him were all the Christmas presents for him and his brother. Topping the pile was Itachi, admiring the Operation game he'd been asking for all year. Shisui immediately forgot about the game they had been playing and made a line for the G.I. Joe action figure he wanted so badly for Christmas.
The boys continued gawking at their soon-to-be Christmas presents for at least a half-hour until they heard their mother coming out of her room. They quickly dropped their toys and ran out of the closet, slamming the door behind them.
The last thing that was said before their mother came down the stairs was, "do we tell them?" from little Itachi. Shisui looked down at his brother.
As if on cue, they simply shook their heads simultaneously.
