Distinguishing between mountains and molehills for oneself is a skill and not a talent. Like any other skill it requires pracitise and a fair degree of dedication. That is probably why so many of us rely on other people to do it for us.

I can't really see however, why the common preference is for molehills rather than mountains. Mountains are not, if you'll pardon the pun, insurmountable. They just need time, planning and the correct equipment.

Molehills, on the other hand, tend to appear in large numbers and with little or no prior warning.

There is far more danger of breaking one's neck tripping over a molehill than a mountain.
