two different worlds.
* part three.

Soojung likes shopping a lot, and Minho tells himself to never suggest shopping to his girlfriend ever again, because nothing good comes out of it. Minho sits on the chair provided and waits for Soojung to pop her head out from the curtains and ask, “Oppa, how does the dress look on me?”. Minho also learns that a ‘yes, you look good’ is very essential for Soojung after saying a ‘no, I think it makes your bum look big’ in the last store.

He, as usual, pays for Soojung’s clothes but his wallet somehow never empties.

“Oh, by the way oppa” Soojung starts and glances at Minho (and to Soojung’s delight, Minho puts an arm around her waist) before continuing, “Umma and appa are throwing Sooyeon-unnie’s birthday party next week. I’m inviting you and yes, you have to come”. Minho makes a face and then says, “Well, I guess I have to go”.

Soojung smiles and to Minho’s delight, she suggests to go home. It’s probably the best thing Minho has heard in a week, to go home.

Jonghyun glances at Minho who’s fully dressed for the party, “You do notice that we’re here an hour early, right? And Soojung isn’t even home!”. Minho turns over and waves a bouquet of flowers at his face, “It’s called surprise, idiot. S-U-R-P-R-I-S-E”. Jonghyun rolls his eyes at his childishness, Minho smothers the flowers in his face. “Where are you going?” He asks as he notices that Jonghyun walks in the other direction.

“I’m going to find Jinki”

Minho waves him a goodbye. The minute Jonghyun is out of his sight, he rushes up the flight of stairs, and breaks into a run. The stamping of his feet can probably be heard from a mile away, but Minho doesn’t really care. He turns right, runs past the familiar washroom and then halts into an abrupt stop. A smile plays on Minho’s lips as a familiar melody of the piano hums out of the door. He pushes the door slightly open with a bold confidence washing over him, the door creaks and the melody comes into an abrupt stop, just like he expects.

Taemin turns around, Minho finds it amazing that he still looks beautiful even though his hair is all tousled up (he probably just woke up). “Kibum-hyung?” Minho wonders if Kibum is the only friend Taemin has, because it’s the only name that comes out of his pretty mouth but he pushes the thought aside and answers bravely, “No, I’m not”. A startled expression flashes across his face, but it goes away as fast as it comes.

Taemin stands up, eyelids still close and smiles, “Who are you?”

Minho smiles, delighted at the thought that Taemin would know his existence, “Oh I’m Min-” but his introduction is cut off with a voice far too irritating, “What the hell are you doing here?”. Taemin’s expression brightens up, “Kibum-hyung!”. Kibum glares at Minho and he repeats, “What the hell are you doing here?”. Taemin pouts a little, “Hyung, don’t be so mean to a visitor!”. Kibum gives Minho a I’ll-let-you-off-this-time look.

“Are you here for Sooyeon’s birthday?” Taemin asks, approaching them. The moment he reaches a hand’s length, Kibum holds onto him gently and Minho answers, “Yes. I just heard someone playing the piano so beautifully, so I wanted to see who’s the pianist”. It wasn’t a full lie, Minho did hear someone playing the piano. Taemin’s lips stretches into a grin, “Thank you so much, Min-ssi”.

Minho almost slaps himself for not introducing his name properly, Taemin reaches out a hand. Minho takes it quickly before Kibum manages to do anything else. Taemin’s hand is cold, yet somehow warm, and Minho likes the feeling a lot. “I’ll be going now. I’ll see you around, Taemin-ssi” Minho jogs off. Taemin tilts his head slightly and asks Kibum, “Did I tell him my name?”

Soojung’s face flushes a deep shade of strawberry as Minho hands her a bouquet of red roses. She gives him a warm hug, the surrounding people (Jonghyun and Amber) start cheering. “Soojung!” A girl trots towards her, Soojung smiles, “Sooyeon unnie!”. Sooyeon frowns as she picks up the hem of her long dress, just in case she falls over, and says teasingly “Can you please not hog the attention? This is my party you know”

Soojung links arms with her older sister, “Sorry unni~”

The large cake is served in an hour later with Sooyeon blowing the candles and Jinki hosting the luxurious party. Minho, Jonghyun, Amber and Soojung takes an empty table somewhere in the corner of the huge hall of their house. “This is pretty boring” Jonghyun whispers into Minho’s ear, making sure Soojung doesn’t hear. Silently, Minho nods (and somehow Amber nods along).

There is a knock on the door, Taemin sits up from his bed, “Who is it?”. The door creaks open, Sooyeon pops her head in, “It’s me~”. Taemin smiles, his eyelids fluttering, “Ahnyeong, Sooyeon-noona! What are you doing here? The party isn’t over yet”. Sooyeon takes off her heels and then jumps onto Taemin’s fluffy bed, the bed bouncing along, earning the younger brother’s complaint whine, “Noona!”

Sooyeon flops her head on a pillow, “It’s so tiring! Those heels and those luxurious parties”. Taemin chuckles, “Noona was the one that told Jinki-hyung that noona wanted a luxurious one”. Sooyeon pouts, “But I didn’t know it would be this tiring”. Taemin taps his older sister’s forehead, “You should get going. They might be looking for you”. Sooyeon heaves a sigh before sitting up and wearing her 3-inch heels again.

Taemin reaches out and calls, “Noona”.

Sooyeon turns around, “Hm?”

Taemin gives his older sister something in his hands, it’s a little box. Sooyeon takes it, her eyes sparkling and she opens it. There is a small necklace with a butterfly-shaped locket. “This is so beautiful, Taemin!” She takes him into a hug and wears it, “How did you buy it?”. Taemin smiles, his eyelids fluttering again, “Kibum-hyung bought it for me. I just told him what kind of necklace I wanted”.

“It’s really beautiful, Taemin”

Taemin smiles in embarrassment, “You should go now, noona. They might be looking for you”. Sooyeon smiles, “Alright. I’ll come back with a piece of cake for you. And I’m sorry you can’t join us”. Taemin shakes his head, “It’s alright”. Sooyeon struts towards the door, humming happily and fingering her new necklace.

“Noona”

Sooyeon turns around.

“Happy birthday”

“Family dinner?” Soojung groans and gives Jinki a disapproving look. “You know I don’t like family dinners, Jinki-oppa!” Soojung continues to whine. Jinki sighs, “I know you don’t like them, but appa and umma are leaving tomorrow again so we’re going to have a family dinner tonight!”. Soojung sighs, “Just... don’t make me sit next to Taemin”

The atmosphere is awkward, really. The clings of the metal cutlery and the glass plates resonates the large and luxurious dining hall, Soojung pokes on her food. “Don’t do that to your food, Soojung. It’s rude” Her mother scolds. Soojung pouts and pushes a piece of meat into her mouth. She looks straight ahead, right at Jinki and then at Taemin. She watches Taemin poke a piece of meat slightly and then trying to clip it between his pair of chopsticks.

Soojung squints her eyes when Jinki puts down his cutlery and helps Taemin scoop up his rice and meat. She slams down her spoon, “Jinki-oppa!”. Jinki looks at Soojung with a startled expression, Sooyeon snaps her head towards Soojung while their parents only continue eating. “Taemin can eat by himself. It’s not like he’s a baby” Soojung growls. Jinki sighs and pushes the spoon onto Taemin’s lips, a sorry expression flashing across his face as he eats.

“Soojung!” Jinki snaps.

Soojung stands up, “Why can’t he just eat in his room? He’s so disgusting!”. Soojung’s mother stands up, “Soojung! That is not the way you treat your older brother!”. Soojung rolls her eyes, “Umma, you have no say in this! Didn’t umma tell the public that you only had one son? Umma was the one who refused to admit that Taemin is your son!”. Sooyeon puts down her pair of chopsticks, “Soojung. Sit down. Jinki, bring Taemin up to his room”

Jinki nods as he supports Taemin to stand up, Taemin whispers a sorry before living the dining room.

The journey back to Taemin’s is nothing but an awkward silence. Jinki seats Taemin on his bed, Taemin tugs on Jinki’s sleeve weakly, “Hyung”. Jinki seats himself beside the younger boy, Taemin tugs his sleeve again, “Am I disgusting?”. Jinki keeps quiet as he observes Taemin’s hurt face, his eyelids fluttering again. “Am I disgusting? Am I a disgrace to the family?” Taemin asks again. Jinki pulls Taemin into a hug, burying the younger’s face into his shoulder. He whispers to Taemin, “No you’re not, Taemin-ah. You’re not”

Jinki and Taemin skips dinner, it’s not like they had an appetite anyway. Taemin sobs himself to sleep in Jinki’s warm chest.
