The first or the last?

Jun 23, 2008 12:24

The first time I heard it was from the mouth of my classmate Alexander.

"...or the first!"

The lecturer had been going on about "living each day as if it is your last". It was Alex, dear unfocused pothead Alex*, who woke me up.

To live each day as if it is your last day to live - it simply does not appeal to me. It never has. Perhaps it is the underlying desperation I know I would feel - frenetically trying to cover as much ground as possible before going out with a bang. I might be wrong.

But if it is the FIRST day in the rest of my life... that makes so much more sense. It brings promises of new possibilities, of starting over, of leaving behind whatever mistakes you've made.

Inspiration. Resonance.

This is the first day in the rest of my life.

What do I want to do with it?

What do you want to do with it?

*Turns out Alex was partially deaf. Hence the lack of attention at times.
