After two weeks of getting up at 6.20 a.m. every day, getting the girls ready for school, making sure they had all the books according to their timetable, getting to know their new friends, making sure they are well adjusted, adapting their enrichment program to suit the new schedule, making sure Andrea gets to bed by 9 p.m. every night and so on and so forth..... I finallly gave myself a time-out and went for a movie treat with Yim tonight.
I caught the show -- Motherhood staring Uma Thurman and I think she's pretty even when she looks frazzled in most of the scene. This is definitely not a show for those without kids. The plot is simple if not predictable. It depicts the amount of challanges the mother faces in one day and in the show, it's pretty much exaggerated. In fact, the one day feels more like a few days. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it very much! I enjoyed seeing Eliza (the mother in the show) expresses her thoughts, both verbally and in print (she blogs too!) In fact, it was when she tried to squeeze out some time from a crazily hectic day to piece together what motherhood means to her in an online essay contest, that brings out something deeper.
It shows how, some days, the stresses of the life you choose can grind you down in the course of a day until you lose your sense of humor and question your own sanity. Motherhood is very isolating, particularly when your children are young. When you are always stooping down to pick up the toys that the kids strew around; when you are always cleaning up after the kids; picking up someone's soiled socks etc, it can slowly erode that passion of being a mother. When Eliza starts to question herself and the choice and sacrifices she made, the husband offers a down-to-earth answer to her doubts and points out quite factually that mothers aren’t the only ones forced to make compromises. The man (Avery) earnestly brings out a wellspring of warmth, exhaustion and understanding to the role of the husband in this show.
And on what the writer puts down in words about Motherhood, it's just so apt. I hope I can get a copy of the book soon!
