Finally, a few days ago (or maybe a week ago), I actually completed the 153 episodes of Dragonball (in Japanese).
It was a hard, drawnout task, as I was never really into DB - I was much more for DBZ. The end sagas with Piccolo and Piccolo Jr are really the only aspect/sagas of DB that I truly enjoyed. But being such a fan of DBZ, and although I knew the background stuff I needed to know - gotta actually watch where it all started!
I think seeing the movie completly spiked up and re-awakened my latent Dragonball Z fevor - not that I ever stopped liking it - come on, it was my first and is my most favortie anime, after all.
A couple of weeks ago, I think it was, I came across a DBZ fanfiction that I had written (the only one i've ever written) about 4 years ago that I had started and had yet to finish.
It was an interesting - sure I was familiar with it already (as i did write it, after all) but at the same time, it's as if I was reading it for the first time. There were actually a few aspects that I had completely forgotten about - there's a plot point that, when it was revealed, took me completely by surprise!
Writing fanfiction....those were they days, haha. But actually, writing fanfiction does have a good use to it - especially since I had to write a couple of screenplays, ie original work, during my time in college - writing fanfiction is actually pretty good practice for writing and developing original stories.
I don't, nor will really ever, consider myself a writer, but to have the ability to come up with a story, even a very basic, streamlined entity that has a beginning, middle, climax and end - I think is very useful. Now, it might still need a shit load of work to really make it something - but hey - that's what collaborations and re-writes are for. certainly any screenwriter will know of just how often such things occur.
I've always thought it'd be cool to contribute a story for a video game. In fact, the last screenplay I did in college was pretty much just that - technically it was written as a mini movie, but it works very well - it's pretty much a perfect basis for - a video game. Not to mention the inspiration largly came from a video game story.
I've been telling myself for the longest time that I will work on it more and really develop it further - but have yet to really do much of anything on it.
Finding this fanction though - has definitely renewed my vigor for writing. So, i decided, since I did like what I had came up with, that I might as well finish it. The only thing that sucks - since I wrote this fan fiction 4 years ago, there are aspects and events that i've set up and don't remember where I was going with it - as well as some backstories and aspects that have to resurface later in the story that I don't remember - and apparently I either didn't type it out and save it to any of my early back up disks - or it's written down somewhere and the written part is not with any of the stuff I have with me and probably won't have access to anytime soon.
Looks like i'll just have to re-imagine a few things, and make sure they fit with what's already written. The one thing i'm not going to do is to do a whole lot of re-writting. It's not that serious and i'm not quite that gun-ho about it all.
Thankfully, for the oringal screenplay, it's still fresh enough to where I won't need to worry about having to re imagine anything - and I have all the notes, ideas, ect in digital form.
