I suspected something was amiss when Nat and I tried to make our usual visit to the Humane Society. We go down once a month or so, leave 5 or 10 dollars in the donation box, and then tour to look at the animals. No, we weren't there to adopt, but it was a great learning opportunity. Nat and I would talk about what a committment an animal is, how much they cost to keep and why people bring them to the shelter. She got to see all the homeless animals and it brought home the spay/neuter message. If we saw a particular animal that was cute beyond words, we'd tell people about it - at home, at work or school. I'd email people I knew were looking for a specific breed if one was at the shelter. So the last 2 Saturdays we tried to go, we were forbidden because, "this place isn't a zoo" and that only people intending to adopt were being admitted. Huh. I thought.
I'd been hearing rumblings about the quality of service and management theret for a while, but this story confirms it:

I really hope that some big changes come out of here.
