The Buzz Kill -- ballot measures.

Nov 05, 2008 10:14

I was thrilled at the election results last night, and I still feel very good about the long term impact that Obama's registration campaign, Obama, and the number of people who choose Obama, and
the changes we see already in the political map of this country.

However, I was saddened to see the ballot initiative results. There is some good news in here, but also some sad news.

Florida's Amendment 2 looks to have passed. Here is some text:

Amendment 2 would limit marriage to one man and one woman, and nullify any legal union that is “the substantial equivalent.” Unmarried couples, straight or gay, in registered domestic partnerships would lose protections including health insurance benefits, hospital visitation rights and the right to make decisions relating to medical treatment in the event of an emergency.

This is one of the most evil targeted constitutional changes I have seen. This is not just a we-are-not-comfortable-with-gay-marriage amendment. This is more offensive than that. This is a mean spirited attempt to take away benefits and protections from people that already have them. Things that are not even called marriage. It would seem to effect not just same-sex partners, but other domestic arrangements that are not marriage. I hope some of the older retired people out there know enough about how this will effect them to make the decisions they need to protect themselves, be that to move before they lose health benefits or to stay and fight.

AZ banned establishment of same-sex marriage and recognition same-sex of marriage. Many people will soon not be married while visiting AZ (according to AZ at least).

Arkansas banned gay adoption. Ok, actually more than that, but that is how the initiative is commonly described and the gist of what they wanted. They banned unmarried adoption and unmarried fostering of children. Yes, yes, *please* *think of the children*! They don't need to be fostered by unmarried people do they?

There is more, but am tired of writing about this.

On a positive note younger voters generally voted this shit down. So perhaps this problem will get
better as less mean voters grow up and start voting. I do think good things are coming, but this is also a sad reminder of how many people feel.
