Catcher in the Rye-End of Novel Project- #4/“Music”
I chose to relate the book Catcher in the Rye to music because I believe that music has many emotions embedded in it, so for people with as many emotions as Holden, music is the perfect way to express their emotions and feelings.
Artist- Stone Sour
Song Title- 1st Person
Chapters- 1-4
In this song Corey (the singer) is expressing his confusion with the way his life is going, he doesn’t understand why things don’t feel right, and why he doesn’t seem to fit in. His confusion doesn’t come from thinking something is wrong with him though, he believes that the world is full of problems that are caused by everyone around him. This is how Holden feels at the beginning of the book, when he is still at Pencey, he feels like everyone around him is fake. He is very sarcastic when he is talking to Mr. Spencer and doesn’t really listen to any of his advice because of his opinion that everyone at Pencey is a “phony”, and that everything is a lie. The song also expresses how frustrated Holden is with the stupidity of everyone around him, and wants to scream at everyone to try and get his point across.

Song Title- I Am Loco
Chapters- 4-8
This song expresses how Holden is getting more and more fed up with school because he has to deal with people like Ackley, who is exactly the type of person he hates and never wants to be like. Holden doesn’t like the way his life is going at this point either, and there are lots of things about his personality that he hates, like being “yellow”.
The stress from all of this is beginning to build up and he ends up snapping at Stradlater because of finding out about His date with Jane. The line that perfectly describes Holden is “I’ve been thinking, and thinking always gets me into trouble” this describes him so perfectly because he is always wondering why things are the way they are, and why he can’t change them, this causes Holden to get himself into trouble throughout the whole story.

Song Title- Free
Chapters- 8-15
This song goes perfectly with when Holden leaves school with the idea that he is going to “live the life” in the city. He leaves school because of his belief that it’s a shame that everyone is so fake, and he wants to go off and go it alone. Holden is disappointed with the world around him, so he leaves school with the hope that he will be able to have fun without dealing with all the “phonies”. Holden keeps trying to call girls and talk to people with the hope that they won’t be fake, but every time he ends up disappointed because the person turned out to be fake after all. Holden is extremely disappointed with the girls that he meets at the club at the hotel because he expects them to be decent company but they turn out to be terrible people, according to Holden. This song also expresses the feeling of the right to freedom that Holden believes everyone should have, but he thinks that most people don’t realize it like they should.

Song Title- Hang On
Chapters- 15-23
In my opinion this song relates to Holden the most, the feeling of depression and the feeling of being on the verge of giving up really explains exactly how Holden feels in this part of the book. This song is about realizing things about your self that you don’t necessarily want to know, and about being different from everyone else. Also part of this song talks about wishing that he could fake being deaf and dumb, which Holden also talks about, because then people would leave him alone. Holden’s heart is “stained with love” too, just like the song talks about, plus wishing that his heart wasn’t. Holden’s heart is stained by many different girls though, he looks for true love in every girl he knows, but Jane is the only girl he’s found it in. Holden is extremely depressed after the incident with Maurice and Sunny, which added to everything else, really took away a lot of his hope and motivation, and it didn’t help that he was embarrassed about the whole thing. A part of this song repeats, “I can’t pretend we’re the same” Which is how Holden feels too, he knows he is different than everyone else, and in a way he regrets it, but also accepts it.

Song Title- Forget it
Chapters- 23-25
This song shows a lot of Holden’s feelings at the end of the story, the feeling of indifference though is the main feeling, and he is past the point of depression after all that’s happened top him. If something bad happens he just doesn’t care anymore, he is just fed up with everything and wants to just give up. Everywhere he turns he runs into some other kind of trouble, and he’s had enough, he’s tired of getting upset about everything. The song also says “it’s a crime you let it happen to me, never mind, I let it happen to you” this expresses how he gets mad at people for doing things that he hates but he also does the same things, like the people at the hotel being perverts, when he is obsessed with sex and girls, which is very hypocritical. Also the lyrics of this song express the feeling of blaming himself for all his problems, he got himself thrown out of school, and he messed up many other times throughout the whole book, and he knows that all of them were his own fault. Just the name of the song, “forget it” shows how Holden is feeling, he doesn’t even care any more, if something goes wrong, he would rather just forget it and move on. Holden thinks he has nothing else to loose but the longer he waits to go home, the more every thing keeps going wrong for him, and he almost starts to lose his mind when he is crossing the streets in the city and thinks he will never make it to the other side. The last line of this song says “I can live forever here,” which shows how he doesn’t really seem to mind being in a rest home; in fact he almost seems to like it.

Song Title- Down Again
This song relates to how Holden feels when he thinks that Stradlater gave Jane “the time”. Holden is extremely upset and confused about something like that happening, which leads to anger and getting punched by Stradlater. The incident makes Holden feel fed up with everything that has been happening to him lately and with everyone at his school. This is the one time in the story that he really explodes though, which is because he feels like he wasted his time and now Jane was no longer there for him. He is not proud of what he is, but he also can’t stand everyone else around him, which is a very frustrating feeling.
