Great opening paragraph! It's really sets us right back into the story. Poor Booth...
I really liked this line in particular: This may have been the first time in a long while that his control slipped enough to allow it, but he’s been responding to her like that since the day they met. It really goes a long way to showing how stretched Booth is that his control is cracking. But it also illustrates his own admission that she still affects him just as strongly as ever.
And this one: Because the desire to know her again is a tight fist around his heart. Just lovely and so very descriptive.
It's good to see Booth being responsible here and having the courage to man up to what he's done. That's the Booth I know and love (and miss in canon...)
You show us so skillfully how big the chasm between them is now and how far away Booth is from here: A year and a half ago, he would have been going to that launch with her. Now, he hadn’t even known she finished a new book. Nothing like twisting the knife in him a few extra times.
And I loved the last line: The problem is, he doesn’t know which one of them he thinks of as the other woman. You beautifully sum up his conflict here. He would never hurt either woman, and yet he seems sure to hurt them both the way that he's going.
Looking forward to the story continuing...
