[ooc] drabble meme

Going with an oldie and a classic.

Give me a prompt and I'll write you a drabble.

The catch is--it has to be for one of my characters or my characters and yours or someone else's you ship them with, whatever. It can be ANYTHING, AU, TYL, first meetings, angst, nice things, etc, as long as it's related to island interactions somehow.

This started as a drabble and turned into a monster. I've just been nonstop typing what is wrong with me.

Also, that is a pretty awesome song and it fits them really well. I had a lot to work with! Things to note... This is quite a few years later, since the song mentions "To you who abandoned your dreams, "10 years later, are you the person who was once me, still smiling?"" That is what I ran with for inspiration! Also it takes place after an AU Bad End, say, if EP5 ended with Battler really dying. Brace for a ton of flashbacks.

I was also kind of inspired by this song along with yours! Sob.

"You know, you can still learn something about the rules for the games you make up all by yourself."

"Oh?" He asks.

"Sometimes, you have to break them to win in the end."

By the time the two of them leave the island, it has already been uncountable years. Even if you have the dates, meticulously added up, right in front of you, it is hard to believe another kakera has sealed you away for so long. It has to end. It has to end eventually. Beatrice told herself this many times, as did Shinichi. After the first few years, it became very clear that if the island wanted you to leave, you would damn well leave at its whims. The ruins were jokes and time wasters to those who would plunder them regularly back home; they had also served as a false hope. After all, they usually held answers. On the one time Beatrice had been finally dragged along into one, after much convincing, at the very end, she placed a hand to the rotting wall muttered a "There is nothing." with a cold blue stare.

That was when he stopped looking through them. Shinichi doesn't wonder if that's a mistake now.

At the very end, they can see the island's fabric of reality ripping. The skyline is white and growing, expanding, slowly tearing and dissolving away the colorful landscape that used to seem like it stretched forever. It comes with a sense of unreality; and Beatrice relents, tracing his eyes for a sign that he believes this is the product of a cocoon system due to this overwhelming evidence.

There isn't any doubt. He knows the island he's lived on is real, even if he can't explain it, because he abandoned that arrogance long ago.

"Shinichi," Beatrice finally speaks. The two of them are standing on the docks, watching this phenomenon unfold. In her hands, she had been holding a rose, one that just turned into golden dust and scattered. A habitual twitch, similar to how one would tear at the edges of paper when they're nervous. Her eyes follow every single bit of gold until they disappear completely, like a distraction.

"Beatrice?"

"How much of my riddle would you say you have solved...?" He'd never touched her with the blue text again. Never let his theories about her existence pan out beyond vague musings, at least to her face. She figures now is the time to ask, before everything turns into nothing and suddenly, the chain around her ankle is fastened tight once more.

Giving the question much thought, he finally answers her, "If I had your last piece, the fourth game, I could break it."

She fixes him in her sight. There is something to be gained from having your first friend in centuries-- the first person you could really trust. Beatrice knows it's the sole element of the world. "There are two pieces of red I've never given you."

The dissolving white that's swallowing the island whole draws ever nearer.

"I opened this game in order to fight Ushiromiya Kinzo's grandson Ushiromiya Battler," She continues. "No one except Kinzo's grandson Battler is qualified to be an opponent. However, in this kakera, I have challenged you as well." She admits, quietly. Suddenly, from years ago, Shinichi understands Beatrice's faint murmur of 'if only you had been born as Kinzo's grandson'. As easy as he could read Beatrice now, he couldn't see where she was taking this.

"Beato..."
