We were recently staying at a hotel in Rouen, France. At around 5.30pm as agreed we were trying to contact a friend who lives there, via our mobile phone. He did not answer so eventually we left a message on his answerphone. About half an hour later we received a call back from him, but his voice/sound was unintelligible; he sounded like an underwater alien. We sent email and he sent email back saying he could not understand the message we had left on his landline phone because it sounded like underwater noises! We called him from the hotel landline and all was well.
Tonight we were watching Autumn Watch where they used bat detectors to listen to a colony of Lesser Horseshoe bats as they hunted. The sound was uncannily similar to what we had heard over our mobile when our friend tried to phone us!
In Rouen, the previous evening at dusk we had remarked on the bats hunting amongst the trees in the hotel courtyard/car park. Our room was on the first floor, about level with their flight paths. Could it be possible that somehow their echolocations had interfered with the telephone calls causing the distortions?
