Teleportation pads! They work based on ship coordinates, and while in theory larger ones could teleport down to planet, they're meant for the ship itself. They're keyed in to transfer from one pad to another, though disruptions in the transfer can and has led to reconstruction in locations other than those intended! Coordinates are keyed in before getting on the unit itself, and units can comfortably hold and move up to four people at a time -- though multiple units can be placed next to each other.

Red vs. Blue.
A character named Tucker complains always about the teleporters because he gets black stuff on his armor. At first, it just seems like paranoia until the Eigth Season where he gets into a fight, gets thrown through a teleporter... annnd comes out with black stuff on his armor.
I ENJOY THIS HEADCANON. I have a feeling Heero would run quite a bit of experiments with such things to test what goes where, how fast they take, and so on. 8|a
Oh gosh yes, Sakura just started out doing the old fashioned way of testing things out.
You know, put something you don't care about on it, look for it on the other side.
Also, the fail rate is low, but low luck stats can up it. In over ten months, Sakura's had one bad teleport -- and that was during weather weirdness on ship (she and Lenalee ended up in the eye of the hurricane based on using this as a plot device). She didn't exactly use it all the time before, but she's backed off since then, though it's been fine when she's used it, and all studies done outside of a few religious sectors show the technology is astoundingly safe for the crazy things it does.
