Every day, I strive not to appear lonely but making certain the symptoms don't show does nothing to alleviate the malady. Leadership is an isolating burden. Sometimes I wish someone else could take over this responsibility.

And nobody who would carry it out as well as you would. Besides, giving it up would mean having to watch from the sidelines, which is even worse.

Watching everything I built fall to pieces without being able to lift a finger would be worse than death. I suppose I'd only be trading pain for more pain. Wishful thinking often sees the consequences through rose-tinted glasses. Ideally, someone as capable as myself would take the reins and free me.

Swine sprouting wings is far more likely.

Guilty as charged. Not that we're incapable of fighting it but it's not exactly a walk in the park. Selfishness is instinctive. It's how one survives and perhaps even flourishes. But at another's expense? Ethical dilemmas abound.

One could argue that there is selfishness also in choosing pain and loneliness over the guilt that would come with giving up.

Better to admit to these flaws in one's character than to pretend to be some incorruptible paragon of good. In being aware of one's flaws, one is better equipped to deal with them.

Very true. People who boast about how noble their intentions are make me sick.
