It helps that he's endlessly told to interact with people his own age more and she's about the only one his own age he doesn't think is ridiculously dull.

These two are surprisingly fun to throw together. They're sort of friends, but not really. Casual acquaintances, maybe? Somebody to talk to now and again without feeling patronized or like they're speaking to somebody below their intelligence/maturity level.

It helps that she's not human, and very not human, both in appearance and mannerisms. That way if he doesn't understand her feelings on a matter, he has an excuse beyond being a broken little mess of a person.
The only thing that keeps him wary of her is her belief in justice. Matthew doesn't understand justice at all beyond the mechanics of it and as he's aware he's basically an enemy of justice just by existing, so he's kind of caught between showing some of his real tendencies, the ones she finds cool, and holding back just enough to stop her realising just how bad he is and rejecting him completely. He probably doesn't think the whole kidnapping thing was as big a deal as she does...Mostly because he doesn't remember it.
