In Which I Try to Combine the Best of Limericks and Haikus into A "Haikerick" (or a "Limeru")

Jan 05, 2008 00:08

Well, I did it. I successfully combined limericks and haikus into one form, the "limeru."
Each stanza is part of a repeated form of haiku syllable pattern: 5-7-5 (haiku), 7-5-7 (inverted haiku), 5-7-5 (haiku again). The rhyme scheme is the same of a limerick (AABBA, CCDDC, etc.) ...Count that syllable shit! it's all there. it looks deceptively simple, but it's difficult to keep all the syllables and rhyme patterns in mind when you're trying to actually tell a story. I submitted it to Sliced Bread because I've been kicking myself for not having submitted anything the year before. Here is the final result:

There once was a girl
Tried to give lim'ricks a whirl.
"I cannot rhyme well."

So she said "Gee, that's just swell,"
"Haikus I will twirl."
But limericks stuck in her head.

Syllables of dread!
Haikus too boring for words.
"This shit is for nerds,"

"I'll combine the two instead!
Haiku pattern specs
And 'seven-five-seven' next,"

"This ain't no pipe dream:
I'll use a limerick rhyme scheme!"
Make for a sweet text.

At once she knew it had zap:
"This is a real snap!"
Created a sensation

Will sweep the nation
That is, if they give a crap.
