My First Time

Ok, tonight was my first time........ reading from the Torah!!!

Most jewish kids get a chance to read from the Torah at their Bat/Bar Mitzvah's, but for multiple reasons, I didn't. I also didn't know how to read Hebrew until about February. Tonight, I read the Torah portion I will read for the official confirmation ceremony next tuesday night. I wish I could invite everyone to come see this big moment, but unfortunatly, I can't. Its annoying but yeah.

So tonight was our final, and first, rehearsal of how the ceremony will go. I know this sounds like no big deal, but there was a lot to figure out. We have different speeches to put in, there are 13 of them, and we had to figure out how to make the service run as quickly as possible, which meant that there is lots of getting up right as someone is finishing one thing to start another. But it's all good.

The Torah reading is one of the last things on the program, but I'm the first one. It's the shortest set of verses, but the most important, since I have the beginning of the 10 Commandments. Actually, I have the first two or three, but no one's counting. So I get up there, and I've practiced from my photocopy of the congregation's book, which has a different set of letters than the Torah does. See, hebrew letters have vowels that go underneath the actual letters like the squiggley under the c - ç. So when you read normal texts, like the prayer books etc, you see the vowels, but when you open the Torah, surprise! No vowels!! So that was kinda scary, it's like reading words that look like this : rl ntrstng, bt knd hrd. (real interesting but kinda hard)

So guess how bad I did? Surprisingly,I only had two mistakes when the whole thing was done. Which is really really really good!! Even the other kids messed up more than me, and I've known Hebrew for a lot less time (like 8 years)!!

Yeah, just thought I'd share that amazing moment with all of you guys!!

luv
Sabrina
