I decided yesterday afternoon that I must have the briyani at Tanjong Pagar Railway station before it shuts this weekend. Joined the colleagues to go on an 'unofficial' guided tour of the station only to find out that the stall closed and moved to Tanjong Pagar market! I ended up eating virtually nothing, only a portion of goreng pisang which colleagues have to 'fought' for and a jug of bundung. I had a big plate of fried rice in the afternoon, just as well. Weren't too hungry.

So, I was among the tons of Singaporeans, Malaysians, tourists who thronged the railway station before it shuts officially next Friday. For the first time (I've only been to the station twice; once to take a train to Johor Bahru and this time for the briyani), I see massive crowd at the railway station. It has always been a quiet place, not a lot of people take railway trains into Malaysia nowadays and the little people who do go there, went for the food. One colleague was saying we should start shutting places to bring crowds over. "Any business not good? Try shutting the place!"

The art-deco building with four pillars of Singa-Malaya economy; Agriculture, Commerce, Transport, and Industry.
FSMR refers to Federated Malay States Railways.
Actually, the name of the sculpter and the year the sculptuer is carved can be found at the foot of every sculpture.

Check out the crowd! Lots of photographers around. We saw one with a very old, vintage camera. The resulting photos must be wonderful!

And... If you are not attentive enough, you might think that the railway station has only one floor. There are 2 upper levels above ground floor. They were formally hotel rooms. Well, the upper floors were formally a hotel. Knowing that, we sneaked out way in. :)

It was dirty. And creepy.
And very haunted, I was told. There is a banana tree in the compound. We went yesterday, a Thursday.

Corridor on the 2nd floor.

Check out the number of people queuing for tickets!

One of the largest rooms which we deduced might formally be a suite. All their rooms have bathtubs!

How long ago was this?

Room with a view.

Yet another room.

No idea what is this place for. On the right or the corridor looks like derelict sty and it was a deadend at the end of the corridor. There is a room at the end of the corridor with a noose hanging from the beam.

A perfect setting for some creepy filming.

Down to the 2nd floor where we found smaller rooms (toilets still with bathtubs!) and a still-in-used prayer room.

I think they are doorbells or call bells for the rooms!

Wow! I remember using that kind of table in secondary school!

This leads into a very big room with an attach bathroom just by this very corridor! We are thinking it might be the older version of today's Ritz's bathing concept.

Every room has a room number, obviously.

And we got caught and had to leave the upper floors.

The view everyone 'risked' the whistle of the superintendent for.

The goreng pisang are absolute sell-out! People crowded around the table waiting for them to be delivered hot and fresh from the kitchen and the moment they were dumped onto the table, you practically see hands and feet flying! People are snatching them like crazy! So, we despatched 3 'snatchers' to do the honours for us. They are pretty good, both snatchers and bananas!

Food stalls at Tanjong Pagar Railway station will cook their last hurrah of food this Sunday before they close shop forever at the railway station.
The railway station reminds open till 30 June 2011, followed by a grand closing ceremony involving the Sultan of Johor and invited guests.
It was gazetted as a national monument in April 2011 by the Preservation of Monuments Board.

I heard there will  be a movie screening next Tuesday or Wednesday evening at the railway station. If you want to take a last look at the station, the next 6 days will be your last chance to.

All pics thanks to Huiz!
