On Friday I "trained" a new lady at work. She & another lady are being hired to stay there while other staff runs the residents all over creation. Friday is a bad night for running. This Friday was especially bad because not only did I have to run, it was the end of the month & I had to attempt to change over the MARs. Um, yeah...
3pm: get to work, get report, set out smokes for various residents (its complicated & individual to each smoking resident), attempt to do some filing/putting new MD orders in charts, get 4pm meds poured because I had to leave at 4:15.
4pm: New lady gets there. I say "hi," we make pleasantries, I tell her not to get comfy because we're leaving in a sec.
4:15pm. We go get the car & get ready to go. Resident going to work joins us; we leave about 4:20 pm. It starts snowing like a bastard. Between that & the amazing amount of traffic, we get back to work at 5:35.
5:35. I get hourly smokes for those who need them; I call up to Other Building & make sure Mr. Resident is going to his outing. I get to suck down a banana.
6:05: we head up to Other Building to get Mr. Resident. We're supposed to leave at 6:15; however, Mr. Resident is slow & it's 6:25 by the time we leave. Aaaarrrgghhhh!!!! Meanwhile, it continues snowing like a bastard.
7:30: get back to work. Rapidly pass meds. Use New Lady to help with some mondane chores of getting another couple residents their snacks/cigs, etc. Rapidly suck down dinner (porcupine balls.)
8:00 Run down to sleeping resident's room to give wake her & give her meds. Takes a few minutes. I'm supposed to leave at 8:15. It takes till 8:25 for me to get out of there. The New Lady stays behind as she has to leave at 9. The snow has replaced itself with sleet. Still manage to get to Resident's work by 8:50 (only 5 minutes late.)
8:50 leave other Resident's work to get Mr. Resident from his outing. Rain continues.
9:40 Return to work. I now have to fininsh signing the old MAR's; replace them with the new ones, do all the other books, do any errant chores, put the old MARs in the residents charts, replace the transfer to hospital stuff & leave by 11 pm. Needless say, that didn't happen. I stayed until almost midnight & I still didn't get everything done.
The thing is, these new people are not nurses. And I'm still not sure what sense it makes for them to stay behind if they can't pass meds or do the charting or team reports or anything else nursing does.
Meanwhile, I guess one of the Supervisors wants to talk to me about scheduling. I'm not sure what, but I'll call him tomorrow.
frustrated,
