I'm not getting on very well with The Promise of Happiness. I would probably abandon it but Justin Cartwright is one of the writers appearing at our local Fiction Festival in March and I'm doing my conscientious best to read as much as I can of as many of the authors as I can because it's more interesting hearing them speak if you've read something they've written

Coincidentally, On Chesil Beach and What I Was were both set in 1962, the former in the summer, the latter in the winter, both have much of the action taking place on beaches, both have an older man looking back on his life. Both mention food, although OCB's food is of the hotel variety. IM, in my opinion, swooped up this period - early sixties - perfectly.
