Next Morning/ New Kids On The Block
Scene:
Large multidesk office area with couches and small offices off to the sides. Two large windows on either side of the office area. One which looks at the opposing building Josh has been eyeing. It’s 5:30 am and Dawn.
Darnell: God damn it I’m trying to sleep. Somebody shut the blinds………..
Josh: Ok Darnell. Seeing as you can’t get off your lazy ass and do it yourself. Oh, by the way thanks for being my alarm clock. (Goes to windows to shut the screens)
Josh: (whispering voice) Holy shit…….(louder) Everybody up…..up now!
Darnell: Now what fearless leader!?
Josh: Shut the hell up Darnell……there’s a group of trucks moving up the street. Military trucks.
Shannon: What? I gotta see this.
Scene: Josh and Shannon at the window. The rest are coming to the window as well, as they wake up.
Approxiametaly, one dozen M813A1 5 ton six wheeled trucks with two hard-top humvees on either end are slowly moving up the street. Flanked on either side are a row of men in field fatigues and carrying assault rifles. Maybe, four dozen men not counting any driving the trucks or in the trucks. The 5 ton trucks appear to be in a cargo configuration. The humvees are sporting a single roof mount machinegun each with a man on it. They are moving slow and seem to be checking out the area, but the men in the open aren’t getting to far from the vehicles and the vehicles are doing their best to stay as close to the center of the road as possible.
Jeanna (an older office employee): Oh thank God!!!! They’ve come! They’ve come! (hugging Karen a coworker)
Darnell: Now this is something to miss sleep for.
Brad (the young office mailboy): Cool the Army is gonna get us out.
Shannon: Those aren’t the Army.
Brad: Then the National Guard then.
Shannon: Nope, neither.
Darnell: How the hell do you know!?
Brad: Yeah, how do you know?
Josh: Their right, not eloquent, but right. Why, the observation?
Shannon: Let’s just say I know. Besides I know it’s hard to see, but look at some of those guys in the front by the lead vehicles. They’ve got long hair, and it’s not tied up.
Brad: So?
Shannon: Are you that stupid? The military doesn’t allow hair like that. One, it is not presentable and two it’s a possible risk in a hand to hand fight.
Darnell: Ok, but how the hell you know?
Shannon: My dad and uncles where in, ok. That’s how I know.
Jeanna: So what are they if there not the Army?
Josh: Looters
Darnell: What? Your telling me there walking amongst the things out there cause there greedy?
Josh: Yes……they apparently have the firepower. They can take whatever they want from the living or the dead.
Brad: Great……just great. Where still screwed.
Brad: It’s so wonderful being on a major intersection….……so convenient…….damn!
Josh: Look there stopping.
Darnell: Looks like for eats. That downtown grocery store. Check it out.
Shannon: Sure enough, but that place looks locked up though
Josh: Not for long
(weapons fire)(some yelling from down amongst the quasi-army)
Josh: Bingo
Shannon: Looks like there arguing.
Darnell: Yeah I think she’s right, hey what the hell’s that guy waving around?
Josh: Bolt cutters……..I think someone wanted to use bolt cutters and the others just opened fire……wasting ammo
Darnell: So there not Army and their not too bright.
Shannon: Yep
Brad: Great….. pissed idiots with weapons.
Josh: That’s succinct enough Brad.
Shannon: Look
Darnell: There getting boxes out of that place. Alot of boxes. Three of their trucks are moving around back.
Shannon: Atleast someone in charge isn’t completely stupid. The loading docks are back there.
Brad: There shooting again. Look…….
Brad: Those are little kids !!!
Josh: Walking dead little kids. Where they come from? The store?
Shannon: I’m not sure, but they where close. Like they where in the shadows or something.
Darnell: And those fuckers cut em down.
Shannon: Their dead. Get it their dead.
Darnell: Still their kids.
Shannon: If one of those sweet little 7 yr olds was trying to bit through your jneck they wouldn’t be kids anymore would they?
Darnell: Yeah,but…..
Shannon: Yeah…..there not kids anymore.
Darnell: Ok, your right, just lay off it, ok.
Brad: What’s it bothering you for?
(Darnell grabs Brad by the collar)
Darnell: Cause I have kids, simple enough for you geek?
Brad: Umm yeah
Darnell: Good then.
Shannon: I counted 9 of them. Seem right?
Josh: Yeah
(Darnell goes and sits down away from the window on a couch)
(Jeanna whose been silent this entire time)
Jeanna: What’s that?
Josh: What’s wha………? Heavy equipment.
Brad: A dozer and a backhoe. My dad was a heavy equipment operator.
Darnell: (distantly, quietly) Good for you geek.
Jeanna: From where?
Josh: The building construction four blocks up I guess
Shannon: But they separated there troops to do it. Not smart.
Josh: Look at what’s coming along with them though, a dozen armed men
Shannon: That’s more sane.
(Miriam another office worker enters the room)
Miriam: What’s with the noise? Some people want to……..(she stops talking as she sees out the window)
Miriam: Is that good or bad?
Shannon: If it’s a choice between either, it’s bad.
Miriam: Oh sweet.
Josh: How are the others?
Miriam: Most are sleeping. I’m glad they gagged Jack.
Shannon: Me too.
Josh: Why?
Miriam: That’s right you where on the roof most of the night. Be glad you where. Jack started whaling loud. Real loud.
Josh: He turned.
Miriam: If that’s what you call it. He tried biting them. But they got a gag in his mouth to shut him up.
Josh: So he’still tied down?
Miriam: Oh fuck yeah he’s tied down. Even more so than before.
Josh: Why didn’t any of you tell me this before?
Shannon: You would have been told, but our view out the window took precedence.
Josh: True
Brad: What could you have done?
Josh: Probably, nothing much, but atleast I’d known.
Shannon: Well you know now.
Darnell: ( from over on the couch): Now what?
Shannon: Well maybe watch them and see what their gonna do with that stuff.
Darnell: Then?
Shannon: Go from there.
Darnell: And wait. Great idea.
Josh: Come on Darnell lay off her.
Darnell: Yeah yeah yeah….sorry Shannon, ok
Shannon: It’s alright
Brad: but
Darnell: but what geek boy?……..I said, she said, nuff said…….got it?
Brad: ok
Jeanna: Can’t they see us up here?
Josh: She’s right. The only thing keeping them from seeing us at the moment is the tinting on the windows. Come night time with the lights they’ll see movement.
Brad: So, we turn off the lights.
Darnell: Actually, kid I’ll agree with you. We turn out the lights and move closer to the center of the building.
Brad: So you agree with me?
Darnell: I said you where a geek, not a moron, kid.
Josh: Seems the right idea, but the bottom of our building is in their perimeter at least until we figure out what their doing…….especially the heavy equipment.
Josh: Karen you’ve been quite this whole time want a job to do?
Karen: Sure something to keep my mind off things.
Josh: Ok, I want you to go around to every light, lamp, anything that is on and switch it off. Don’t stay near the windows too long when you do it. Even kill the lights in the internal offices and areas. Can you do that?
Karen: Yeah, but one question. What about where Jack is?
Josh: Leave the lights on in there. Don’t even bother going in, ok.
Karen: Done deal then (Karen leaves the room)
Shannon: Ok, so where killing the lights. What else?
Darnell: The elevators. I know it’s only a two story building, but if they do check the building it’ll make it harder for them to move around.
Brad: Where’s the cut off?
Shannon: We ask Briggs he’s maintenance he should know or atleast have a good guess.
Josh: Briggs still asleep. Last, I saw yeah, but he’s an early riser I think.
Josh: We give him another thirty minutes then we wake him up if he’s not already up.
Janeen: So are we going to have a meeting about all this going on?
Brad: Yes, Janeen
Janeen: I didn’t ask you, I asked Josh.
Brad: Well sorry !
Janeen: You little…..
Josh: Janeen…………………yes where going to have a meeting about all this. Tell you what Janeen you go get everyone up, ok. Whether they like it or not. Blame me if they bitch about it. If they ask why tell them because it’s important. Also, tell them to stay away from the windows. If they ask why. Tell them this…..just this….There are people with guns outside. There alive, but they look dangerous and they don’t know where here. If they want more tell them to talk to me…….Me only, ok. You got all that?
Janeen: Yes, perfectly.
Josh: Ok, then go.
(Janeen leaves the room)
Brad: There not going to like this.
Darnell: Screw what they don’t like. Where in hell on Earth and maybe about to walk the gauntlet. This isn’t a vacation trip.
Josh: Let’s cut it and go into the main meeting room. It’s organized and has room for us all to hash this out. Besides it doesn’t have windows.
Josh: Darnell get withBriggs. You and him check the lower access routes into the building fast. After that you standpoint near a window and keep watch, but stay hidden. Have Briggs come and tell me when you and he are done checking the access to the building.
Darnell: Otay Massa……..
Josh: Darnell.
Darnell: I’m just kidding massa….I’s won’t do it again. (and smiles)
Josh: Darnell just do it. Now go.
