Nationals is this weekend, and US Figure Skating is in a really odd position. ABC and ESPN dropped their coverage earlier this season of all figure skating events. NBC picked up nationals and worlds, but not the Grand Prix.
US Figure Skating lacks a poster child following the exodus of Michelle Kwan and Sasha Cohen. Kimmie Meissner is fantastic when she's focused, she has the triple-triples, and she's capable of a triple axel. She was World Champion in 2006. BUT, she withdrew from nationals this year due to an injury.
Mirai Nagasu, 08 national champion is not to the point of maturity. I don't think she will perform as well at nationals this year, but maybe in 2010 or 2011.
Rachel Flatt... pretty consistent, I can see her taking nationals this year.
Ashley Wagner is probably the most mature of the new generation of skaters. She's got really good edges and expression, and her jumps are very light.
Alyssa Czisny is sooooo awesome and expressive and has perfect lines, THE BEST skating quality and edges. She has the jumps, but she needs triple-triples. If she can improve her jumps just a littttttle bit, she'll be golden.
So for nationals, who even knows. I can see any of them winning.
Whoever ends up going to worlds, we need her to WIN. US Figure skating needs a new and consistant posterchild.
The Olympics in 2010...
List of Potential medalists in no particlar order
1. Yuna Kim - Korea - The most consistant, total package, She has my vote for gold.
2. Carolina Kostner - Italy - Big jumper, fast skater, a little inconsistant
3. Mao Asada - Japan - Has landed two triple axels in one program, consistant, has some bad techniques on jumps that will hold her back.
4. Miki Ando - Japan - The only woman to ever land a quad. She has the jumps, and the consistancy, but she needs more expression and choreography
5. Kimmie Meissner - if she recovers from injury and has a good 09/10 season, then she'll be a threat.
Don't even get me started about Men's. Men's skating is so random these days, I couldn't even begin to imagine who will win, although I hope it's Johnny Weir.
And I'll have everyone know, I called it that Shizuka Arakawa would win gold at the Olympics in 2006 when everyone was saying it would be Sasha. I know what I'm talking about. lol.
