This skirt thing has me really angry. I wonder how they'd really feel if they knew they had an atheist in their midst. I am one of the most popular teachers here (really, I'm not just tooting my own horn) and they'd just flip. My old co-worker (he got fired last year), Scott, was writing an expose on the Gulen Schools for his MA thesis. These places are shaaaaaaaaaaaady and not just in how they still owe me (now) $10,000 for last year and how they completely fucked over my husband. (He built the canteens up from nothing last year and paid a monthly rent of $1,500 to have them open...and we agreed with the old Gen Sec last year that the rent would be $1,300 this year. Then a new Gen Sec comes and wants them to remain "within" the university (to make money off them) and says Veysel can have them if he wants them for $2,500. Veysel told him to go fuck himself. The main reasons we did not go to Tajikistan this year was for my raise (hani para?!) and the rent of the canteens going down.
And now we have to wear skirts. Okay, maybe the hizmetchis in Turkey have their womenfolk wearing long skirts but come on...we're in a Former Soviet state! My co-worker Lena is NOT going to start dressing like a Turkish Muslim! She's going to continue wearing her mini-skirts with her black thigh-high boots and work it like the "Natasha" she wants to be.
