the other day i found myself in the vet's office taking my dog, chip, to get tested for what turned out to be hepatitis. while we waited my mother and i decided to do the new york times crossword in the fort worth star-telegram. upon seeing the clue of "important decision made on 5/17/54," i was able to access my keen knowledge of united states history that was obtained during my junior ap history class and determine that the puzzle was referring to the case of brown vs. board of education in which the supreme court decided that separate but equal educational facilities for minorities was unconstitutional. my knowledge of this case also earned me three other words in the puzzle as i remembered that plessy vs. ferguson in 1896 was the case that brown vs. board overturned that had originally declared separate but equal schools constitutional, that thurgood marshall, founder of the naacp, was the lawyer that argued for brown in the case, and that earl warren was the chief justice that wrote the majority opinion in the case. i tell this story simply to remind all of you that no matter how much i may try to hide it, i am still an enormous nerd. tonight i bought a fender rhodes piano off of ebay for a mere 425 dollars plus shipping. hopefully it will come in time for certain upcoming events. this makes me two for two in ebay auctions, and i owe it all to richard blackwell. taught me everything i know. tonight the two things that have been the biggest source of frustration in my life lately were addressed, both for the better. i'm very content right now. and i love you all dearly.
