21st Century Choice Composers
When you think of remarkable classic composers, you think of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, along with countless others. Their music transcends time. It doesn’t come in waves of fashionable trends, fading in and out as time progresses. These composers exemplify a constant, a continual throwback to our classical upbringing. Their contributions to music will never be denied.
In the current age, composing has undergone a radical transformation. You won’t witness Mozart writing a piece at his wooden piano. It’s Danny Elfman conducting a full orchestra in an audio studio, meticulously listening to each note, each rhythm. You could almost call it an art, even though it’s simply amazing how such beautiful classic pieces could be produced without today’s advancements.
Michael Giacchino is a paramount figure in composing today. He sprang forward from obscurity, mildly known as a composer for popular video game titles, such as Medal of Honor, to composing scores for television and movies. He is my favorite composer to date.
His music is simply warm, frightful, and imaginative when it needs to be. No two works of his sound the same, but his music is distinctly discernable because of his love the stringed instruments. Giacchino’s underground upbeat techno score for the show Alias gave it a fast paced action based rhthymn. While his drum laden metal composition for Lost gives the show it’s creepy inventive feel.
Unlike Giacchino’s string heavy music, Sean Callery’s work consists of drums, bass, and more bass. Xylophones top his list of choice instruments and rightfully so. He’s scored the show 24 for five years now, and the intense rhythm of his music is always a flawless fit. Lately he’s been experimented with guitar riffs, backed with drums, it gives an edgier harder sound.
