I promised.
It’s surprising sometimes. The stereotype “men don’t cry” has been proven to be a myth born from skewed perceptions and societal pressures a long time ago. However, there are people who still get shocked at a man crying.
Now, there are exceptions among the male population who are “cry babies” by default. Leeteuk, the leader of one of Kpop’s biggest boybands, has no shame in turning on the waterworks. The man could probably cry until the cows came home. There is also Donghae, who has a gentle soul. Bless his heart. Though his crying tendencies are not as frequent as Leeteuk’s, Donghae’s tears has earned him a spot in the cry-baby category.
Then, there are men like Jung Yunho, the “manly” leader of top Korean singing group TVXQ. People are not only drawn to his astounding height, but also to his charismatic presence.
Great with kids.
Athletic.
Polite.
Heart of gold to be quite honest.
However, those are not the only things that catch the public’s eyes.
The man never cries. The number of times this man has probably cried could be counted on one hand. Granted, this number is based on public observation. God only knows the times he cried behind the scenes. However, one could guess that was no t a lot either.
Yunho had many reasons to cry. From the superglue incident to winning his first music station award to living in a completely different country to singing at sold-out concerts across Asia to watching his TVXQ family literally tear apart by the seams…yes, Yunho could have shed some teardrops. The thing was…he didn’t.
Right?
“What is crying,” Yunho wondered aloud. Luckily, Changmin was not around to hear that inquiry. The little (big) snark would have made some sort of smart alley remark. The young leader chuckled, but it had a tone of darkness to it. He should really go distract himself before he sank any deeper into his ponderings. Yunho just couldn’t help thinking about his promise to his grandfather though. He promised not to cry. Yunho wondered if that was the right kind of promise. He really has not allowed himself to cry. It had become an unwritten law for himself, and Jung Yunho held fast to that law like the reliable young leader that he is. Did he bless or curse himself from never stopping to learn the art of crying? Pain. Joy. It didn’t matter. Both are incorporated.
Yunho sighed and made way to exit the apartment. He had the sudden memory of Jaejoong’s talking about how he cried in his heart.
Jae…
A tear dropped in his heart. Yunho, stone-faced, walked out of his apartment with head held high.
Maybe he knew a thing or two about the art of crying after all.
