I'm new (hi!) and basically I have two questions...
1. Does Depo decrease your likelihood of getting functional ovarian cysts?
2. Which brands of combined pill are likely to be most effective at preventing them?
At 13 I had an ovarian cyst which caused torsion of an ovary and gave me agony for 3 days straight whilst the doctors figured out what was up with me. I had to have surgery to have both the cyst and my left ovary removed.
At 17/18 I tried the combined pill but was recommended after 3 months to switch to progesterone only because my blood pressure was on the high side and I started on Depo, which I stayed on through the majority of my 5 years at university. A year ago last January I switched from Depo to Implanon because of moving to area where there were no family planning clinics easily accessible and not wanting time off work every 3 months.
Last Friday, now 24, I wound up in hospital again because of pain from two cysts causing torsion of my remaining right ovary. Luckily this time I knew what was going on and thanks to a quick bit of laproscopic surgery I'm now back to normal, but my consultant wants to make sure the same thing doesn't happen again!
The options mentioned to me were the combined pill and surgery to attempt to 'pin' my ovary in place to prevent torsion, but because of the blood pressure thing I'm wary of the combined pill and I really would rather not be going back for more surgery... He also mentioned that Implanon is known to result in cysts, so whatever happens my implant is coming out!!
