Defiance S2, eps 1-2
Urgh, I'd forgotten how terrible the dialogue is. And how mixed the show's approach toward women. Several times in the season premiere I found myself wondering why I was still watching the show. Then it reminded me: Stephanie Leonidas (sweet "Hi Dad" after killing a lady), Trenna Keating (Doc Yewll is so, so great), and the
aesthetics of the Castithans (the whitest whites who ever whited). Sticking with it for now, Firefly ripoffs and all. New kink for the season: voyeurism!
True Blood S7, ep 2
Seven seasons in and I still don't know what to make of this show. Bizarre, campy, gory, sexy, satirical, soap operatic, ridiculous, over the top on every level. Did I mention bizarre? It's just hard to figure out whether all that adds up to "bad" or just "weird."
Anyway,
the opening scene won back everything the season premiere lost. [And that YouTube link doesn't even show the whole thing.] The AV Club called it fanfiction/fan service with the same derisive tone most articles use when they talk about fanfiction, when it should have pointed out that finally some vampy m/m got decent screen time* to balance out all the other non-m/m stuff the show has exploited to date. It's not as if Jason/Eric vampire-blood dream sex was any more farfetched than half (or more) of the pairings this show has teased viewers with.
*cough
Eric killing Talbot mid-seduction*
In any case, you've got to love a show that inspires remarks in the AV Club comments section such as: "Eric looked surprisingly good, in spite of the Hep-V, considering he was on fire last we saw him."
FYI, more spoilers in comments.
