First batch of VVC recs

Aug 12, 2012 22:22

I was extremely lucky to catch an earlier flight home tonight, thanks to leaving the con a little sooner than planned in order to share the shuttle ride with thirdblindmouse. That meant I could actually grab a shower and will get to bed on time (zzzz)-and have a few minutes to throw some first-pass Vividcon favorites at you.

Aww, [character]

The Adventure by greensilver (Neville from Harry Potter) - Calls up your (by which I mean my, but also clearly a lot of other audience members') love and nostalgia for the HP universe and embodies it in the story of Neville, who grew so much to become the (Other) Boy Who Lived.

Everything Is Wrong by laurashapiro (Britta from Community) - Britta's the worst, but that makes her-and those who identify with her-the best. Also there are bagels. And friends.

(Someone pointed out in vid review that both of these offer character analyses supplemented by the friends and ensembles who at first tease or bully but ultimately support them. And that many fans identify with the awkward background underdog.)

Girl in the War by amnisias (A girl from Justified) - I don't know the movie, but this made me tear up and want to give or receive a hug at the end like the one on the screen.

Fun

A Different Kind of Love Song by giandujakiss - I can't wait to watch this properly instead of over people's heads at a dance party, but what I did catch was so joyous-an impressive scope of sources about characters being geeks, and geeks falling in love, and us loving them, and us loving geekiness and one another, and then there's intertextuality and possibly deeper meta layers that thingswithwings was smart enough to parse in a recent post, and it's all wonderful.

Vividcon 2012 Premieres Intro Vid by greensilver - So much fun, you guys, and so well-executed. Ha, so to speak. Multifandom Hunger Games AU.

Blue by kuwdora - Loved remembering this song and seeing so many blue characters, uniforms, environments, clothes, etc., and being shown how it's all a celebration of being different, a defiance. Also, winner of Vid Song Most Often Stuck In My Head This Weekend (including right now).

Dark/Grim

Barton Hollow by fan_eunice (Homeland) - Absolutely blew me away. I'll be watching this one a lot. A lot a lot. Warning for violence and themes.

Future Proof by obsessive24 (Chronicle) - Masterful building of intensity. Warning for violence.

Everybody by kuwdora (Star Trek multi) - I don't know what to say except that 1) someone made a vid all about the Borg! and 2) it's set to the Backstreet Boys. And it works. Body horror and humor rolled into one.

Smack My Bitch Up by hollywoodgrrl (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Swedish and American versions) - Similar to a previous GwtDT (festi)vid narratively-girl gets the shit kicked out of her, girl turns around and kicks twice the shit out of everyone else-but with added layers of comparing two film adaptations/Lisbeths and using a remixed song to reflect that. A study in maintaining intensity/energy as well, although I'm not sure the vid still couldn't have been shorter. Warning for violence and graphic sexual violence.

How I Got Over by here's luck (The Wire) - A powerful vid that I am told is even more tragic if you know the source/characters.

Silly

Right There by obsessive24 (Voldemort/Harry) - and just as disturbing/sexy/hilarious as you might think.

Martin Scorsese by Jetpack Monkey (Martin Scorsese movies) - I need to watch this a second time, because while funny, it baffled me on first viewing… because I hadn't caught the vid title and was trying to parse it using the Jack Sparrow song title. *light bulb* ETA: And yes, it's quite funny on rewatch! And, er, re-re-rewatch.

Forever Yours by anoel (House/Wilson … x5) - After getting over an initial disappointment that the vid I'd been enjoying was cut short, the medley format earned back my love. All the House/Wilson moments, from the ridiculous to the infuriating to the poignant, from the beginning to the end of the series.

Action

Ride to California by bradcpu (Avengers & prequels) - I'm lukewarm on the series but loved the energy and structure of this vid.

Mama Said Knock You Out by absolutedestiny (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Legend of Korra)

SSB by Jill (Red Tails) - Spectacular choice and use of song - Jimi Hendrix's national anthem to the Tuskegee airmen.

Non-premieres I hadn't seen before

Mama by obsessive24 (Hamlet, BBC/RSC 2009) - Left me with a breathless, "holy hell" feeling.

Running Away by absolutedestiny (Son of Rambow) - Feel-good, tug-at-your-heartstrings, love of filmmaking, childhood friendship vid.

And that's not counting all the themed vid shows I missed-I mostly attended panels, but have the playlists and DVDs to check out in the days/weeks to come-or the ones that will grow on me.

I had such an awesome time this weekend and am absolutely thrilled by the comments on my two premieres. Will tell you about the best parts of the con soon. ♥

For now, to bed.

cons, vidrec
