Labor Day

Last month, people started posting about wanting to "clean all the things!" And then at Vividcon, they were talking about wanting to "review all the vids!" It was confusing until someone explained that it's a reference to the blog my sister had told me to read, Hyperbole and a Half.

Now it is my turn to shout the catchphrase from the blogging rooftops, because I had a productive day today.

Today, I:
- Washed two sinkfuls of dishes
- Cleared the mess of papers and wedding leftovers on the floor and bed
- Logged the receipts I found in those piles
- Cleaned the bathroom sink, tub and toilet*
- Hand-washed the sad pile of knee-highs
- Cleaned the stove
- Dusted the TV; stored the broken VCR
- Put away the toaster I'm not using (hello, four cubic feet of kitchen counter space instead of one)
- Organized the menus and coupons on the fridge
- Organized the little "junk" drawer
- Cleaned out and organized the storage closet, incl. folding all the foldable boxes
- Swept and vacuumed
- Put my SGA/Inception story on the AO3 and cross-linked it; read some kink meme fics; downloaded vacation pix from my camera
- Watched the Yankees lose to the Orioles, wth

*Given a choice, do not use a surface cleanser called Bam. It smells terrible. I've had to put my Glade thing in the bathroom and shut the door, hoping the vanilla will overpower whatever was in it.

And! With my newly available kitchenware and fresh groceries, I made:
- Banana chocolate chip muffins
- Beef soup with rice noodles, onion and water chestnuts
- Roasted potatoes
- Roasted Brussels sprouts

The only things I didn't do were laundry and filing, the latter because I have to go get more folders. Really needs to be done, though.

Now I am sitting down and watching some Netflix, and in a little while I will clean myself to round things out.

Cleaning always feels good. Not the work, but watching the place where I live become orderly. (I'm talking about the times when I lapse in keeping things tidy, and stuff piles up.) Feeling the difference it makes in my state of mind. Knowing I can walk around barefoot without stepping on grit or dust bunnies. Knowing I can cook because I have dishes and counter space. Er, knowing I can host my overnight guest next weekend without cringing.

The new year is coming up on Thursday. The next couple of work weeks are going to be tough, but I have a travel-free schedule for the first time in five months, and I think having this clean apartment to come home to will help with a fresh start.
