Season's greetings from synn's cozy home! I got in safely yesterday after some minor travel delays. There are blankets and fresh-baked prosciutto/provolone/fennel biscuits and a beautiful white tree, and now also there is an Internet, for to be sharing some pictures with you from this week.

View from my apartment after the snow stopped last weekend:

The government decided to close Monday because Washington doesn't know how to plow snow properly, so we had a lovely, unexpected day off. My Internet promptly crapped out, so I ventured out to see what the town looked like covered in snow, and ended up camping out with laptop for the first time at Starbucks.

Yesterday, taking off from Maryland:

Coming in over Asheville:

Blue Ridge Mountains, looking properly smoky:

Yesterday evening, a friend of synn's family invited us to see the finalists in a national gingerbread competition, held at the Grove Park Inn, a gorgeous hotel/spa at the top of a hill. I love the thatched-roof, look made of brick.

Some of the houses were really impressive.

Are you ready for the coolest one ever?

Really?

Okay, here:

That's from the Youth category - Ellie Barlett of Dayton, Ohio.

We then partook of a sumptuous buffet dinner. The view from our table out the back of the inn was as beautiful as the building itself.

Downstairs, the Christmas tree and fireplaces and ceiling fixtures were so huge, we felt like we'd been transported into The Nutcracker.

Back at synn's-the lovely tree.

Annnnd, gifts today!

Spock onna chain!

Monster onna pencil holder!

Octopus-squid-thing onna shirt!

And more. It is a happy time.
