Some notable things from my trip to SXSW this year:
We left Nebraska on Tuesday and got into Austin at about 6 a.m. on Wednesday. We took Hilary's '95 Taurus Wagon, which, when I first looked at it, I about had a stroke...and then when she told me that it has 302k miles on it, I actually did have a stroke. But, once we got it on the road, she ran like it was freakin 2 years old. I was amazed, and the stroke kind of went away.
We stayed in a tent in the backyard of one of Big Aug's pals. They were extremely good people to us, and their cat was smart as a whip. The little guy could almost turn a doorknob with his front paws. One of these days I think he's gonna get it.
Wednesday night started off with a nice bang. We got in line at Emo's early and were able to get into the Mountain Goats show. We had to pay 20 bucks, plus it was 3.50 for a Pabst, and that was as cheap as it got at the bar, so it was basically a middle-of-daylight raping sort of thing, but shit, it was worth it because the Goats show was fantastic. We were thinking about staying for Blonde Redhead, and considering we payed 20 big ones to get in, we probably should have, but we were all pretty exhausted from the drive the night before and from walking around all day, so we went to bed instead.
Thursday night we went downtown for awhile. We saw Wayne Coyne at a show at the Chugging Monkey, and I wanted to say hi to him, as he is pretty much the same to me now as Joe Montana was to me at age 8. Alas, he was enjoying a show and I didn't want to interrupt him, and when he left the club he was bombarded with interviewers and stuff, so I left him be. I do have video of me standing right behind him, so that is pretty awesome.
After that I caught Shearwater and David Karsten Daniels at a church, and it was powerful as hell. Not only was the music great, but whoever was running the board had that shit sounding creepy good in that church. I'm really glad I saw David and talked to him afterwards. He's plays with the Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers and I love them, but I hadn't really checked his solo stuff out yet, and I was pretty blown away. He was a really pleasant fellow to talk to.
Something notable before the church show, Big Aug and I went to say hello to
diskothiq aka Peter Hughes of the Mtn. Goats, who was also pleasant to talk to, and he introduced me to a guy named Thor! Besides being probably the most ridiculously cool person I met on the trip, he also gave me the most ridiculously cool quote of the whole trip. A girl approached him to say hi and he told her "Hey! The penises you drew on those muffins were AMAZING!"
After the church show we went back to our host's house where they were also hosting a house show. I proceeded to get drunk. At about 1 a.m. Hilary and a fellow named Jed came by and picked me up to go back downtown. We went to see Do Make Say Think at Soho Lounge where a sweet old lady was checking badges and wristbands. Since we didn't have either, we had to sweet talk her and give her puppy dog faces until she folded over and let us in. I'm not normally one to nag and bug people, especially little old ladies, but I'm glad I did in this case because Do Make Say Think was PHENOMENAL. Their bassist has chops like I've never seen, and they just seemed like jazzy drunk pirates dancing and goofing off and playing extremely excellent music. They played Reitshule, which is probably in my top 5 favorite songs of all time. I talked to one of the drummers afterwards (they had 2) and he said they played it completely on a whim in the middle of the set for no real particular reason. It's a fairly obscure song off of their album & Yet & Yet, so I was elated to say the least. I woke up early on Friday and saw them again at Emo's at noon. They were just as good then, though understandably a bit less energetic.
After that we got some free tacos and a lot of free Lone Star beer at the Insound party. Big Aug went next door to see Shearwater again, but I stuck around to see Pelican. I probably should have gone over to Shearwater, because Pelican, though loud, were sort of boring. Friday night is kind of blurry. I drank some beers and saw some local Austin bands, but started feeling woozy and ended up going to bed. I missed out on an Andrew WK secret show, which Big Aug got to see. I was bummed, but I needed the rest.
I gotta get goin to work so I'll make the rest of this quick. Saturday, we went to the convention center to check out Flatstock. Basically it's just millions and millions of screen printers and their show posters. I met Jay Ryan who is an incredible artist from Chicago and one of my personal favorite screen printers out there. He was a total doofus, but a really good, humble guy.
That night we saw Hella and they were good except for their singer who sounded like Isaac Broc of Modest mouse having a really weird seizure. Those are the two most notable things from that day, besides the good breakfast taco's that I had that morning. Sunday morning we left at about 8. I drove Hilary's car 13 hours straight from Austin to Lincoln, NE, stopping at A&W outside of Denton and Wendy's in Salina, KS. I finally pulled into my driveway in Kearney just before midnight last night. Eric cooked me a most delicious burrito and then I slept through class this morning and here I am now, still alive! Barely!
Oh! I almost forgot the Bubble Trumpet! Sometime around Friday morning this happened:
