Progress...

When I was talking with my photography friend Nick the other night about lighting, we also chatted about a picture of his he took a while ago where he put his camera on long exposure to do a night shot, but also used a flash to illuminate himself. It is probably my favorite self-portrait he has ever taken... so awesome, in fact, that I'm going to share:

Check out his shadow! Isn't that beautiful? I love how it looks like a dove, or an angel. Too cool.

Anyway, we were talking about how he did this picture the other night, and it helped me bridge a gap in my mind for a picture I have been wanting to do for months but wasn't sure how. Ever since I drove over the Smithfield Street Bridge in Pittsburgh about 2 months ago I have wanted to do this. There are cool lights all over the bridge, and a nice wide median, which is key so you don't die in the rush of nighttime traffic. I loved the idea of just standing dead center, like "BLAM! Here I am, dangit!" I didn't have a flash at the time, which is needed to illuminate me in the night, and since I now do, I was able to accomplish something I didn't think I'd achieve for a while:

There are things I'd change next time, and I am definitely going to re-shoot at this spot sometime down the road. But look at what I was able to do with a flash and a camera from 1980! I am damn proud of myself, and not ashamed to admit it.

(funny, as far as photography goes, this isn't terribly difficult to do. But as you all know my lighting struggles, it is one giant leap for Lauren-kind, which is why I am so excited!)
