I was really intrigued by the trailer (and the idea of reading the book), too. It did seem to have grim hints in the movie, so I'm not surprised that you say the book is grim. I think I can handle that. Thanks for your commentary--now I'm even more anxious to try out the book!
I'll post a review (which may or may not be super long). I haven't been reading half as much I used to the last couple years or so, due to work. But I'm determined to get myself into reading more than just my tried and true favorites, and then reviewing them for fun. :)
I read Cloud Atlas a couple of years ago and found it to be an interesting read. I also noticed that the movie doesn't appear to coincide perfectly with the book, but it has been quite some time since I read it. Nevertheless, it was a good read--though, like you said, definitely not relaxing--and maybe the movie will be okay too.
At first when I saw the movie trailer, it reminded me of The Fountain but when I read your review of the book, I see how the film may be different. What got me really curious is the construction of the book and the way the stories are told - I've never read such book before. The plot also sounds interesting, so I will definitely read it if I find it here. Thank you for the review and therefore, recommendation!
I've never seen The Fountain, but I roughtly know what's it about. I can indeed see the similarities, but I think the stories in Cloud Atlas might be somewhat more seperated. I'm very curious as to how they're going to tell the stories in the movie: also first half of the stories and then the other half, or more all mingled, like an ensemble movie (such as Love Actually)
