2013 - the final tally

So my Goodreads total and the total I am presenting here do not match. Again. According to GR, I read 115 books in 2013. My list here tallies 135. That's 20 books that I didn't include on GR for one reason or another - either it was a book that I just didn't consider "worthy" of counting towards my challenge or it was a book that I read for a ( Read more... )

Mmm, excellent list, excellent list! I am very glad to see you read so much Terry Pratchett this year (including "Good Omens", one of my favorites) and also Patrick Rothfuss. I LOVED "The Name of the Wind", loved "The Wise Man's Fear" only slightly less, and am very curious how he plans to wrap up that trilogy (and where it ends up stretching into a quartet). I follow Rothfuss on GR, he posts some interesting book reviews. Also, was this your first reading of "The Westing Game"? That was the first mystery I ever read, I still have an extreme fondness for it :)

"Skelling" has been on my to-read list forever. The only David Almond I've read so far is "Kit's Wilderness" but I've probably read that 4 or 5 times, I like it so much.

I'm interested to know what you thought of "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo". I don't see the sequels on your list- we have fairly similar tastes, should I give it a try? It's so long I've been hesitant to start it as its so far outside my usual genres and 'grittiness' levels.

Also, I just heard about "Death Comes to Pemberly". Did you like it?

Dorothy Dunnett has also been recommended to me but I have yet to try any of her books. Are you a fan?

Thank you for the list approval! ;) I thoroughly enjoyed all the PTerry I read this year. I've decided that I won't try to read the entire Discworld series as fast as I can but instead save them up for when I'm in dire need of a laugh. It was in such a moment that I remembered my partner has Good Omens and got it down from the shelf. Best medicine I can think of.

That's really interesting that The Westing Game is one of your favourites. I read it because it was one of Oddmonster's favs as well and she recc'd it to me at one point. I really enjoyed it and for a "kids" book found it darn hard to figure out the mystery.

I think you'll love Skellig and after that you totally have to read the companion book My Name is Mina because it's one of those typographically unique books and I need to own it. ;)

I have read the entire Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series and I found it a real page-turner. But I don't think it's your cup of tea. There is a LOT of graphic violence, quite a bit of it sexual, and it's pretty hard going at times. There are certain passages that I wish I'd never read -- or at least, didn't remember quite as clearly.

Death Comes to Pemberley was very ho-hum. I expected more of P.D. James. And I expected Darcy and Elizabeth to be involved in the sleuthing but they weren't at all, except for incidentally. I figured the whole thing out before the reveal and, in many ways, the whole thing was rather dull.

Dorothy Dunnett is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. I'll be talking about the Lymond series much more when I finally get around to posting my highlights of 2013.

I will definitely be upping "Skellig" on the to-read list with your recommendation. I probably won't read "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" I guess... you are not the first person who has said they are good but probably not good for me.

Bummer about "Death Comes to Pemperley", it looked like an interesting set up.
