So, the little country bird went to the big city last week, and had a fabulous time!

I went to stay with the lovely aisling_door  and her family on Long Island.  Such good people.  Her dad immediately started treating me like one of the family, including admonitions to "Eat! Eat!", and I got to meet her younger brother and the bulldog.  Her mum was at a reunion

I'm impressed with you being able to ask a question and assert yourself in such hordes as well! Sounds like you did jim dandy. I've been wondering, is Mr. Rickman romantically involved with anyone (is that what is meant by "partner")?

Oh, wish I'd known that Long Island is home for you! I'd have gotten a recommendation and made a pilgrimage to one of your fave 'shrines'.

Thanks for the compliment! I think asking the question was made easier by the fact that I was facing the stage rather than the (very full) theatre. Mr. Rickman is romantically involved with a woman named Rima Horton. I don't know much about her, but from what I do know, she is a formidable intellect. They have been together (though I think there have been a couple periods of brief separation) for over 40 years now! From what I've read/seen, he tries to keep her out of the spotlight, and they have a very low-key relationship, though she does things like coming to NYC to see the Artist's Talk and the play. Some unkind people claim that she is his beard, but one just sort of expects (and largely ignores) that sort of gossip.

I am truly blessed, aren't I? And not the least of the blessings is having such wonderful friends.

You are so kind. I was only a child though, so my shrines are nonsense mostly -- a tiny forest, a school, a hometown church, and bakery, etc. The most recognizable would be supermarkets and fast food chains. It was initially a surprise to find no "White Castle" over here; to my memory they still make excellent onion rings (BK nor Jack in the Box do). But most of all...my family.

It had only recently crossed my mind to wonder if Alan was gay or not, I think if he was that being out wouldn't hurt him, I certainly wouldn't care. His relationship sounds similar to Brent Spiner's (Data from Star Trek). Certainly the idea of a man being attracted to an intelligent woman is very interesting, and something I'd attribute more to a European than an American (unfortunately).

Childhood shrines are often the ones that have the strongest hold on us. I went to the same Catholic school as my mother, my aunts, and my grandmother. The chapel, library, and convent in that school (built in 1863) are the most special places in my life.

There are a number of "gay" discussions revolving around Alan Rickman. And I agree that it wouldn't make any difference to me (well, except for squeezing my poor heart), and his career really shouldn't be affected either. Personally, I don't think he's gay. But whether he is or not, he's an intensely private person, and thus far I've been ever-so-grateful that no idiot reporters have tried to drag any info out of him. Besides, I absolutely adore the idea that he's been with Ms. Horton for 40 years. It appeals to the romantic in me :D
