Character name: Belarus | Natalia Arlovskaya
Fandom: Axis Powers Hetalia
Timeline: Present day (2011)
Age: Natalia is 19, appearance-wise. She has been alive, roughly, since the 6th - 8th centuries. It all gets foggy, you see…

~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
 Immortality, or well, a damned stubborn will to stay alive for a very very long time. This means she also heals, from the superficial wounds to the mortal.
 Stronger than the average human.
 Combat friendly! She has a talent and fascination with knives.

How would they use their abilities?:
Those that annoy her may get a knife pulled on them or find a few unpleasant gifts from an anonymous giver.

Appearance:

She looks much more innocent than she is. Very petite, but quite irate.

Background/Personality:

They say that Belarus is the last dictatorship in Europe. In the case of Nations it’s speculated that the Nation does not always agree with their boss but abides anyway out of duty. Natalia is the type of girl where this has to be put into question. You see, she isn’t a playful girl. She’s about as far from playful as you can get. She doesn’t have a vibrant sense of humor, either - rather, she’s no nonsense and will have no guilt in calling out those she sees as less than …mature, smart, what have you. She’s very forward and blunt.

Natalia has earned herself a scary reputation due to her intense personality. The only thing that is muted about her happens to be the softer qualities such as compassion and personal regard for others… She isn’t all bad, despite this. Not really.

Few actually get to see her at her best - guarded emotionally, she often appears impassive to the point of cool. She is a fiercely loyal woman, emphasis on ‘fierce’, to those she trusts whose numbers are few. To those that she does not trust, Belarus is someone to give a wide berth.

Belarus is not stupid. She is fully aware that she has a certain gift when it comes to making others obey, out of fear. This is where that regard for others comes into play. Perhaps it is telling of her as a character that she refuse to change her behavior for the benefit of others. She’s seen in the series as willing to get in other Nations’ personal space just to make her own point - she is not here to make you feel comfortable. In fact, you could call her sadistic in how she takes advantage of a situation.

Let’s take her brother as an example. Russia. He’s naïve but powerful - and incredibly paranoid. There are two instances of him displaying fear in the anime; a bizarre chain letter from Poland (who knows man, who knows?) and Belarus… Unfortunately for him she uses her tenacity for Bad Things, namely sticking to his side. If that means breaking into his house, she’s willing. There is no question that she is aware of his distaste for her obsessive (and unrequited) love for him. No matter the barrier he throws up she is there. Always.

Her motivation to marry her brother is not definitive. Natalia is seen to have a fondness for her brother since childhood, though it wasn’t necessarily a romantic one. We don’t know when she decided that her feelings were love. What we do know is that a good amount of energy is spent trying to convince the poor guy that they should Become One. Her attachment to her brother is one of the reasons why she has canon dislike for Lithuania - when they were younger versions of themselves he took Belarus away from her brother and she was unable to see him for quite some time. Perhaps it was a matter of absence making the heart grow fonder or something along those lines.

Despite her bullheaded determination, she is incredibly dependant. Looking back through her history, the majority of her existence was spent being occupied more than liberated. In fact, it wasn’t until 1991 that she could honestly boast independence - and by that time the damage was done. What seems like a running gag in an anime (re: Natalia’s obsession with Ivan) is a reflection of a shift in Belarusian culture fading to favor Russia’s, even using his language rather than her own.

Her harsh personality and more questionable traits could be blamed partly on a less than spotless history. She had her moments of glory and she had more than a few hardships. During WWII at the Great Patriotic War, a third of Belarus’ population was obliterated. Revolutions had kin fighting one another. Chernobyl? While the plant was located in Ukraine, the majority of those that were harmed happened to be Belarusian. Her luck? Not so good.

She is a poor nation, but not in spirit. Without some of those rougher qualities she may have been trampled and stripped of her dignity by now. So yes, she is tough and maybe even abrasive; these qualities are out of necessity. Natalia is a proud, yet slightly unstable woman. Some make excellent damsels in distress. Her? She would sooner stick a knife in you than be called such a thing.

Strong, clever, and capable; she has a lot of fight in her - and that is stated in a positive light.

Understandably, it always goes back to her being one of the harder people you could ever try to approach. She can be highly aggressive - her bark being nice in comparison to her bite - when provoked. Only a few things get her angry to the point where she expresses it - even Lithuania gets the silent, painful treatment most of the times - and it mostly has to do with others not respecting her brother (we don’t see the same for her sister). She is caustic in her words and aloof on her good days. Possessive, manipulative, and calculating - it would seem like there is more bad than good about her.

She survives on the principal that nice does not win favors as it hasn’t done anything for her. She is capable of being businesslike (not quite amiable, but not glaring or otherwise threatening) when it’s benefitting her, surely. Otherwise she is deeply in denial. Natalia wants to be wanted, admired, and paid attention to. Her boss, strictly speaking, more than likely doesn’t on the basis of the tight ship he runs. Her brother fears her but does not respect her and it’d be laughable to ever think he would love her back. Instead of crying (or pouting, or actually VOICING the importance of her intentions in a genuine way) she turns to force. It’s not the best attention, but it’s attention.

Maybe honey gets more flies than vinegar. Natalia holds no interest in flies.

Note: For a more chronological look at her past (with some analysis thrown in), I threw this (http://bipolar-bride.livejournal.com/2164.html) together. Main aspects that affect her personality as a whole that are not elaborated above are shown in Russia’s attitude toward the Belarusian culture - in so much that it was considered bad and “Russification” was the way to go. Link posted to entry as I didn’t want too much text all up in hurr. I hope that’s okay?

Have you read up on how the game works?: Mooching (or in Natalia’s cases forcefully coercing, because fuck, do you want her babysitting?), some freelancing about, some missions (let’s stick to epic potato peeling!).

Wait a tec, ferrets don’t flame. Unless they’re Draco Malfoy. Booyah. (Just kiddin’ baby I love you. And fiend fire…)

1st person sample:

[Guys, what you get right now is a pissed of Natalia. Her face seems blank but her eyes are particularly… flashy. Is flashy a good word? Perhaps… and if looks could kill she would be a much more pleased woman. As it were, they can’t. The room behind her seems to be in utter disarray. In fact, Natalia, who is hardly without a hair out of place looks a bit frazzled.

Look at the room, now look at her. Back to the room.]

If you are thinking that you can come in and take what is mine you are wrong. Also--[the image is jostled as she fetches something out of view, but then a crudely scrawled note is dangled in view] You have a very stupid sense of humor and I cannot be imagining you are more than twelve years of age.

DO NOT THINK THAT I WILL NOT STRANGLE A CHILD!

You imbecile! [the note is gone and a deadly calm Slavic woman is staring in your face. Remember that chick from the Ring? I think you’d rather have her staring you down humble citizens of Thor]

Here is the deal. You will return my items to my room by the end of the hour. If they are here, unharmed, I will in turn not harm you, da? I have no real interest in hurting someone that is as unfortunate as myself in being stuck here. Know that.

[Now, her threats are always questionable. She wouldn’t strangle a child, but oh, she will cause damage in whatever way she can find if someone is as brash to steal from her. A strained sound is heard as she shifts her weight back slightly]

I am not an unreasonable person, unlike rumors are saying. I will not seek you out. If my things are returned.

[a beat]You are now having 58 minutes-do be making haste. [a click and the feed cuts out.]

3rd person sample:

Natalia felt restless in that way one feels when they believe they are wasting away in stagnation. Routine was a relative notion; for some it meant 2.5 kids (people considering pets as children, probably) and a white picket fence. Going to a nine to five in an over-starched dress shirt. A retirement package. For Natalia it was different. It was war and obsession, a loyalty that persisted whether it was healthy for her or not. It hadn’t been the most pleasant of times, but she had been used to it.

She wasn’t one to believe that she was meant for a happily ever after. She wasn’t stupid.

That didn’t mean that sanity was on her best side. Sanity was also a rather relative notion, one she had quietly pushed aside in her pursuit of Oneness. The thing was, she had tried to keep a calm head about meeting with her brother on many an occasion. A simple request, both formal and casual would be sent to her brother. Time after time he would ignore her. Time after time, she would have to let those claws show.

His avoidance had set the wheels in motion, the very ones that had her calmly cracking his security codes one night (you see, she was smart and noticed too much) when it was much too late for anyone to be up, knife tucked away. If he couldn’t love her, he would at least pay mind of her. After all, behind every strong man was a woman controlling the way his head turned, no?
