Where The Wild Things Are
[Spoilers Ahead]
------------------------------------
To to be created from a 48 page, 9 sentence book into a 90 minute film is definitely an accomplishment in my opinion. The beauty of this film was its simplicity, as even in the first 20 minutes before Max sails across the ocean, the central relationships that will receive examination through the film are shown. As there is Max, His Mother and His Sister. Which all play out when Max enters the island Where the creatures are, as you get a sense of similarity of Max in Carol, KW in his sister and a mixture of both KW and Judith in his mother. I personally felt a strong urge in Max's father being absent in 'The Bull' as he remained in the background being silent. The psychology really grabbed me, as Max was really was a wild child with an amazing imagination.( And i Honestly miss that part of myself.. that inner bliss before you grow up were everything is an adventure and friendship has no complications just fun and games. ) And that showed as i felt the entire time i was in the mind of a 10 year old, as the film doesn't advance his mental age by giving him adult or even teenage thoughts, where personally ( at my current age ) i would question the creatures due to their passive-aggressive, depressive, and anti-social behavior. With that being said, i loved also that even that the creature's came off as adults or older adolescents, Max didn't fully understand that.. as to him, they were who they were. Since i began reading about the Production of this film, I knew that the soundtrack was going to be quite amazing as it was all composed By Karen O ( of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's.) and in the heart of some of the intense parts of the film.. it wouldn't of struck deep if it wasn't for the score. I was also greatly impressed by the Puppetry and Special Effects of the Creatures themselves, they were brilliantly humanoid/monstrous which is what i didn't expect but indeed it was a pleasant surprise as well as fulfilling to their movements, actions, etc. To finish, the film feels it hit myself in the right age bracket in which it should be shown. I wouldn't be one be telling parents what they should show their children but i feel that this film wont really reach out in its psychological metaphors and understanding to children. As well as the film is rather quite dark itself, I'd be certain though it could reach out to every viewer in their own and personal way.
